80 series (1FZ) cooling system overhaul

Nice write-up Brian.

Did you know you can rebuild the viscous coupling on the fan for something like 11$?

Toyota sells the sillicon oil in small tubes, it's as easy as open the clutch, add new oil and close. I did this in my 4Runner 3.0TD and it worked flawlesly.

brian,
nice write up and i would be curious to know how your operating temps go-and the IAT also.

one thing- do you feel the 80 engine bay is tight and unusually hot? I found the opposite to be true. partially due to the inline 6, there is gobs of room in the engine bay and it runs relatively cool, not hard on oil at all.

I have discussed the pros and cons of the old brass and new aluminum but never came to any conclusion - maybe the fact it is new is the most important thing... the ron davis aluminum would be the ultimate but the price...ouch.

however, with the majority of my wheeling in the dry, hot desert climate I am with you on trying to get as much "buffer zone" in the cooling system.

The humidity (or severe lack of) in the desert is a real issue in stress on the cooling system. I wondered to my Venezulan friend (Alvaro) why the 80s there don't have the cooling issues quite as much and he reminded me they basically live in the jungle...100% humidity!

anyway, great writeup and future reference

Thanks much.

Blizz,

I've heard that you can get new oil and that's a good point for anyone that doesn't want to spend the cash on a brand new unit. I went with the blue hub clutch, because I've heard there is more updates to the clutch than just the oil, but I could be wrong.

Life,

One reason I suggested it might be too hot is a combination of my own experience verses reading about others. It does seem to me that when opening the hood, the engine seems abnormally hot, compared to others that I've delt with. That was mostly during the summer and before this overhaul, so we'll see if there are any differences.

Engine temps on a very long freeway trip, with some combined city driving were between 179-181 with a very occasional and brief 184 when climbing a hill or sitting iding at a rest stop. This was with ambient temps of between 55-65 degree. So far, the highest temp I've seen since the overhaul is 186, but that was just for a few seconds while idling.

Before, the temps never got below 185 when warmed up and occasionally got into the 190s. I've only had the scangauge since the early winter, so I can't really compare when the weather gets hot this summer.

I wonder what radiator the Venzeulian 80s get? Or any of the 1FZ powered 105 LCs out there? That would be interesting to find out. Especially over in the middle east.
