80: three seater?

Would it be possible to have three seats in the front of an 80? I know 40's and 60's sometimes have a driverseat and a 3/4 bench...would this fit in a 80 as well? Because of the high roadtax we pay overhere I'm considering taking out the rear bench and turn it into a 'van' but still want to be able to take my two kids with me.......

I'm sure the was a 10 passenger 80 series for the middle east market that had a front bench and two, two passenger jump seats but I can't seem to find the part number anywhere for the front bench. I've had two BJ60s with the front bench and loved it. I'd be reluctant to lose my center console fridge in my HDJ81 or I'd consider the swap.

You can make the 80 a 3 seater, 5 seater, whatever you want. All 6 seats unbolt separately. Wait, read your post after i posted.. i thought you just wanted 3 seats.

As far as a 3 seater bench in the 80, it will be really hard given the tranny shifter will be in whoever's crotch. There's really no leg room either. Basically if you "could" do it after removing the center console... that person would have to be small and have to sit diagonal facing the glovebox.

I don't see it working.

It seems, the GX models that are common in Africa, had an 1 1/2 front bench on the passenger side (I posted this question also on the South African Club forum) but I can't seem to find this in Europe......

This is what it looks like on a RHD.

So I will have to take out the centre console?

Yeah... at minimum. Thats the space you need to sit. The only thing left will be the e-brake. Also, some 80's came with fridges in the center console and rear heater so you'll have to figure out what to do with all that too.

I don't have a fridge, just the heater underneath the passenger seat, but with no more passengers in the back that'll just have to go.

Armrest/storage box, yes, but maybe not the center console around the shifter. I think those types of seats came mostly on the poverty pack 80's--bare bones and that is why it doesn't have the trimming around the shifter. But the less you take out, the harder it would be for someone to sit in the middle.

Also, I only see two seatbelts in that pic. Not sure if there is a third.

Some 80's came with bench seat in the front overseas, I've ridden in one. It was not that comfy....remember riding in grampa's old truck with the vinyl seat that is not adjustable??? ya it's just like that.

Now I've found a 40/60 bench, I'm looking for seat covers (pref. canvas) to make the driverseat and bench match (seat is black velours, bench brown skai)...anyone know a good address? It's a LHD vehicule!

I assume the 80s that you're looking at have airbags? No?

Children and airbags don't mix.
