Hey man, I'm building a Burb for this sort of thing myself. How do you like those grabbers? Just curious on general wear, Street manners and how they did in the rocks. Thanks.

Do you have all the bugs worked out?

Thinking about paint yet?

You've built one of the nicest square body Suburbans on the site. Keep up the good work!

Thank you man, I really appreciate that. She's pretty solid as it is, there will always be things I want to change but at this point it performs really well for what it is.
I think about it every time I look at the Suburban haha! I've put almost no effort into it in the last 6 months, I've got a few things I need to knock out before it gets hot outside. Paint will happen eventually.

The grabbers have been great tires for the desert, they leave a lot to be desired on snow and ice though. After a couple years now they're starting to get a little bit louder on the highway but I haven't rotated them as often as I should. The next set will be 37" BFG KO2s.

I'm curious what lumber did you use for the platform? I'm looking at building the same thing and trying to see if I can find the right lumber from some of the caches of scrap lumber.

Plain old 3/4" plywood and 2x10s. I've been thinking about changing the platform setup, it's not entirely practical. The storage areas underneath are 64" deep and I lose things under it at times because I can't reach them, also the height makes it difficult to crawl in and out of the suburban when sleeping inside. I'm 6' tall and 250lbs, it's a lesson in flexibility every time I have to get in or out of the back. I've got the passenger side area crammed full of quart bottles, u-joints, serp belts and rags, they're all just sort of shoved in there. I could make better use of the space I've got available back there and I plan on changing that.

At the moment the suburban is torn down in the driveway getting new king pins on the front axle. I will have that back together this evening, maybe tomorrow evening.

Ah, 2x10 makes sense...I think I'm going to go that route then. I'm fine with having to jump up a bit but I might put out a step for the wife as a courtesy. 64" of storage space down there would be fine for more; I might put a water talk under it with a small pump since I probably don't need all that room.

Well the front axle is all done and back together. We headed out to run a local trail called Mormon Wells road this morning. It's not a challenging trail, you can do it in a 2wd pickup but we all had a good time and enjoyed the scenery and weather. We started at 80* in the desert and by the time we reached the top we had seen rain, hail and a little bit of snow.

Well it's been a while, time for a little update. Just in case anyone is paying attention.

I finally got my winch installed and wired. It sat in a box in my garage for a year and a half...

We went camping as often as possible over the summer, anything to get away from the miserable heat here in southern Nevada.

I installed a new set of fans too. While I was at it I set them up to kick on sooner (200* rather than 210*) and the truck hasn't gone over 200* since.

A couple weeks ago we headed up to cedar mountain in southern Utah to catch some fall colors and we nailed it, got there as everything was at it's peak!

I also went to Trail Hero in Hurricane Utah, did some wheeling, watched some rock crawling competitions and camped by sand hollow reservoir for three nights. (Thetrailhero.com)

So that's been the last few months of Daisy's life. Now you're all up to date.

Looks like you're having a lot of fun with that thing.

I've got the same yellow beehive bumpers sitting on my bench waiting for install. Are they actually a press fit into those cups, or is there a bolt in their chewy center?

The yellow foam is bonded to the cup as far as I can tell.

hmm, I'm beginning to think I've got the wrong part, despite double-checking the listing in rockauto. Going to have to look into it some more. They appear to be the same size as my factory front bump stops but supposedly there's a crimp in the edge of the cup that holds the bumper.

meh. I've got a couple weeks to figure it out, not re-doing my level-lift until after the election. GM sure likes ot use the same parts design forever, when they can. I'm also put off by their seeming to be more 'foam' than 'rubber'. Can't imagine they'd take any beating.

I used GM part number 15712438.

They're soft, I'm pretty sure I compress them completely when I hit them. One day I'll have air bumps on this truck but for now they're doing their job.
