Well, I've been busy in the camper... I ordered a Blue Sea 6-fuse box and used that to rewire what was once handled by three HUGE wire nuts. It turned out really well, and I highly recommend using one of these!! I may put one in my boat too so I can do away with the old round glass fuses. Having the ground buss really cleaned things up, and I still have an extra circuit to use for ?? after splitting off the fridge 12v from the accessory 12v. (Why were those ever connected??)

I'm using a SunSaver 6A charge controller, which feeds the battery directly. Panel bolted down on the roof. This should pretty much prevent me from ever needing to start the truck and run it to charge the battery again!!

I also wanted some way of seeing battery level without having to plug in a voltmeter and think about it. I found one on amazon that seemed promising, and saw it in SLO_F-250's camper thread. I inquired how it work and he said he wasn't using it, and then he sent it to me!! Thanks Paul!!!
I put it on a switch, which just turns off the LED so the monitor logic stays running all the time. I love it!! When I recently left the heater on for a week (With the gas shut off...) it told me as soon as I peeked in the camper that something was wrong. FYI, an 85 watt solar panel won't keep up with a heater fan that's running ~8 hrs a day. The battery was down to about 25% when I turned on the meter about day five of the poor thing trying to keep up...

I also ordered a sweet USB power port and put that in on a switch. Got a new 12v outlet too, since the old one was pretty crappy looking. Now all three power plates match too!

While I was messing with wires, I hooked the faucet back up to it's original on/off switch. No reason not to, since I had the switch. Now I can shut it off, and even if the switch/valve gets bumped, it won't make a mess. (Not that it ever did... Just seemed like a good idea.) It's also handy to back flow the pump a little when the tank gets really low, as it occasionally air locks. I also moved the thermostat down to the side of the cabinet. It always read 5-10 degrees cold when camping in the winter, so I'm hoping that this location works out a little better to keep the readout more aligned with the temp inside the camper.

Told you I've been busy!!
For my next project, I'm going to try to cut this table down to fit the opening that makes the dining area into a bed, or make a new table that takes advantage of the extra width too. The camper came with plywood that fit here, and the table stored over the bed... Seems crazy when the table isn't that much different in size... I found the table material in white at Home Depot, but not this light grey yet... Going to swing by Outfitter and see if they have some, since they're right near where I work. Maybe they'll have enough that I can make a proper top for the new cabinet too!!

Heading down near Poncha Springs for Memorial weekend... Looking forward to some more nights in the camper!!

Awesome work man, thanks for sharing it. I live just north of you in loveland and am looking around for the same type of camper.
Might be picking your brain when I find it.

Cheers!

Chris,
GREAT WORK! You are sure giving some life back in to the old girl! Glad the Battery Level Indicator works. I like how you put it on a switch! :) Looking forward to seeing some pictures of the rig out camping!
Cheers,

Not so many shots of the rig I guess, but its purpose isn't to look awesome in pictures, it's to allow me to take pictures of awesome places!

Just an update on the solar... This is by far the best mod I've made. I changed around the wiring some right after the install. Now the RV plug only sends power to the fridge. This way, I can run the fridge on 12v when I'm driving, but never accidentally run the house battery down if I leave the fridge on 12v after stopping or unloading the camper. I added a relay to the truck so the RV plug is only powered with the key on, so I can't run the truck batteries down either! I don't even plug the camper into the truck if I'm not going to use the fridge on 12v. I have not had a single issue with the camper battery being down since the solar went in. Even on cloudy camping trips, the solar charges the battery back to 100% long before the sun goes away.
Solar = Best. Mod. Ever. :)

 Very nice I like what you've done so far. Good to hear the solar is working out I need to get serious about getting one for my FWC.

Jack, your camper is probably mostly wired for it. Even if it's not, it was one of the easiest camper projects I've done. I got my stuff from SolarBlvd. 85 watt panel, 4 Z brackets to mount it, and a Morningstar Sunsaver 6 charge controller. No need for expensive MPPT for a camper setup, PWM works just fine. Looks like they have a 80w and 100w panels for decent price right now.

My camper is running one Group 31 battery and it charges nicely from the 85 watt panel. If you're running two batteries, and using a LOT of 12v power, you could probably use a 100 or 120 watt panel, but even an 80 would probably do if you're not charging multiple laptops and running an electric blanket all night. :) I could have put a 100w panel up for the same money, but it was heavier, and I didn't want the extra weight on the roof.
Get on it, camping time is upon us!! :)

Cold weather camping pics

Met my girlfriend in Hooper Colorado last weekend, and thought I'd share a few pictures, since we stayed in the camper. This is at the Sand Dunes Pool, which is a developed hot springs in Hooper, CO. It was around zero Friday night, and -14 Saturday night. (I had to pee at 3AM, or I wouldn't have known.) We used the camper heater just a little so warm air circulated in the water holding area, one little 1000w heater on full time, and one up in the corner of the bed area running not much at all. It was plenty warm and comfy in the camper. The water line froze a little the first night when we didn't use the camper heater, but no problems the second night with the heater running every 1/2 hour or so.

Making a little dinner Saturday night. We have a lot of crap. And this reminds me to shop for a light to go under the overhead storage cabinet. (It's dark when you're cooking and blocking the light from above...)

People talk about condensation a lot, but I've yet to have any problem at all with this camper. I normally leave the roof vent over the bunk cracked just a wee bit, but even when it's cold like this and I don't, we haven't had any real condensation issues, just a few droplets on the vents. I think the camper probably leaks enough that we don't get much chance to build up any significant moisture... Also, the heater is vented to the outside, which is much better than a catalytic heater for keeping the moisture out of the camper. And I live in Colorado, where 10% humidity is fairly normal. :)

Spent last weekend camping and riding in the Valley of the Gods area of SE UT. We had a great time, as usual! That whole area is just beautiful!! It's just a littel NE of Monument Valley, which was a popular backdrop for many westerns, and the old coyote and roadrunner cartoon! :)

Camped about 3 miles in off the main highway, on the east side. Got there just as the sun was fading...

Saturday morning we took a hike to let the dogs roam and sniff...

Then headed for Moki Dugway and Muley Point.

Looking out from Muley Point. John's Canyon Rd is below.

And then back to camp and the dogs.

(Rough day for this one!)

Sunday we rode John's Canyon Rd. It was all dirt, and I think we followed it for about 17 miles. Ended up back where the going gets a little technical and a lot of ADV'ers turn back, and decided that was far enough for us too.

Remains of two cabins or something like a cabin. The first is more likely a cellar, but the door is half buried, so it was at one time quite a bit deeper.

This one is just a fireplace and some logs. Someone did make a nice fireplace!!

Just one of the many ways my dog earns her nickname. (Pigpen) (No fires allowed in VOG area. Lots of fire rings though...)

Time for another project!!

Ok, from our last camping trip, where no fires were allowed, it was obvious that we needed another way to kill some time. We have been using my laptop for downloading or looking at pictures, and for watching the occasional movie. It occurred to me that having a monitor in the camper might be handy...

I was going to convert an old flatscreen computer monitor, but then I still need a laptop to run it, as the only input was the VGA cable. A little searching on Amazon led me to a 15" 12v flatscreen TV with about every input format known to man... This plus my sweet new smartphone means we can watch movies, look at pictures, or whatever... I installed it on a swiveling under cabinet mount, screwed into the roof where one of the old table holders was so there's some structure.

Came out pretty well!! According to the papers, this little baby uses about 1.5a when on, and a LOT less when off. (I'll just unplug it when we're not using it.) Picture looks good, sound is nice, and I got a 2 year warranty! Now we're "roughing" it!! :)

Folds up against the roof, and there's just enough room between the roof and bed for the TV. (I'll have to remove the bedding from this area, but that's no big deal.)

Next project will be getting rid of the 2pc full height door. I'm going to try to rebuild my door and re-use all the frame to make it work, rather than buy a new one... Should be exciting!!

Thanks for the spectacular photos! My wife and I are returning to Ut after spring break for a 10 dayer. Can't beat the red rock state.
