Wouldn't take a lot to find out what is wrong with the current motor. THEN you can make an educated decision. It might be a $3 bolt that has worked its way loose.

i read the 4L60 doesn't clear the front driveshaft w the LT230, and that the 4L80 does. Any truth to that? My D1 is in awesome shape and I'd hate to toss it when the motor goes. I can get a 5.3/4L60e for cheap.

Dunno. You could get a custom front driveshaft with a pillow block to move the driveshaft away. That would probably work.

4L60E has a very wide oil sump. You could use an really skinny front prop but the 4L80 is also common ( found in 3/4 ton trucks) and a much tougher transmission anyway so it's not even worth trying a 4L60E IMO.
