95 3.9 disco getting too hot

I've seen the lower hose delaminate and suck closed. Make sure the lower hose is good!

There is usually a coil spring inside lower hoses, this prevents the hose collapsing under suction.....I'm not sure if the Genuine Parts LR hose or all replacements have them........You can always pick up a spring from any wreckers - just find a lower hose of the same diameter and cut to lenght if needed.

It's also critical to add coolant and bleed the system EXACTLY as the repair manual says!.......otherwise you get air trapped in the coolingsystem and it fails to circulate properly or even to fill the full quantity of coolant!

I've never seen a coil spring inside a lower hose, genuine or aftermarket

Give the fan a few spins, if there is resistance and it remains constant move on. If it loosens up replace it

Check your timing! too much advance will create heat

next, do a compression check, make sure you aren't throwing money at a cracked block/blown head gasket. Inspect plugs while you are at it. They should all look the same.

If all that checks out, and the water pump has been ruled out, buy a new radiator.

Does your 95 have the water valve over the passenger valve cover? Its pretty rare, and I think I've only seen it on 94s, but if you did somehow get a 95 with it make sure your heater is on whenver you are adding/checking coolant.

Make sure you pull the thermostat and test it in a pan of water on the stove.. I was driving home last thursday and when i pulled in the driveway and turned the truck the coolant was boiling over. I drove it around that evening after it cooled off and things seemed to operate well. Drove to work the next morning keeping an eagle eye on the coolant temp with my scanner and it started to creep up after driving a bit. Turned the AC on and kicked the heater to full blast and made it to work with the truck maxing out at 223.. Drove home same way, heater on full with the ac running (on one of the hottest days of the year too, fortunately traffic was light). After the truck cooled down, i pulled the t-sat and did the stove test.. failed miserably, didnt even open a fraction of an inch with the temp up to 220 at a full boil. Thermostat failed closed. Fortunately I had an 180 deg stat and a gasket in my spares box. Tested the replacement while i had the pan of water going and worked just as it should. Drove up the grapevine to a club meeting on saturday and even in 100+ weather driving up hill with the ac running temps didn't get above 205...

The fan is not coming on. I will be replacing thermostat and fan switch today. If that does nothing I will replace with chevy s10 fan clutch (as reccomended by LR service manager)

How do I get all of the air out of the system?

I'll tell you...I've had a '94 Disco from new.

High coolant temps should be resolved by bringing the o.e. components back to spec...I can't imagine trying to / getting any benefit from a different fan clutch.

I've had mud between the radiator / air-con condenser - a thermostat that failed closed - hoses that leaked - hoses that collapsed.

I've never had an issue getting air out of the system on a drain/flush/refill...just make sure the heater temps are turned to "hot" and that you leave the radiator plug as well as the expansion tank cap off when you re-start the engine with the new coolant.

Yes, it will heat up / expand and dribble coolant on the ground...just don't let the dog lap it up and you won't have a problem...when air has burped out and before it gets silly hot...screw the rad plug in first and then cap the expansion tank.

Deal with the simple bits first --- make sure the rad is clean inside and out, replace the thermostat - oh, the gasket can be a PITA to line up since it sits vertically...hold it in place with a teeny dab of grease. - confirm timing is within spec...

And either get a thermostat with a teeny hole in the top edge or drill one yourself.

I'm sure there's a technical name for the little hole with the fiddly bit in it...but you know what I mean, right?

If not, find the old guy at the auto parts store...he'll know.

Best of luck...

This is such nonsense just replace the fan clutch with the proper component. Its likely where all of this started... "super extreme duty fan clutch that doesnt turn on until 230 degrees".

Pulled thermostat housing off....there was no thermostat in the truck! Put one in with new gasket, and put in new fan switch. Replaced a heater hose andfilled with advance auto brand 50/50 coolant. Runs great now!

If you need the AC fans to keep the engine cool, when not using the AC, you have cooling system problems.

Where's that quote? I can't find it.
I've never seen a super duty fan clutch that fits the Discovery that doesn't lock up until higher temps. The one on my '95 Disco is locked up more, not less, that's why in most cases it's overkill and the Imperial 215157 or Hayden 2991 are fine.

I thought my issues were solved and I think for the most part they are but today when going on the first real trail ride at slow speed she started getting hotter so I turned on heat and cooled it right back down. Any suggestions? I'm thinking of wiring my ac fans to a switch where I can run them at slow speeds..also going to try and add water wetter to the coolant. The truck has functioned flawlessly since I put a thermostat in it, I have don some slow speed stuff without a problem but today when creeping along on some more technical stuff she did get hotter than it should (needle was 3/4 of the way to the top white line on temp guage)
