'99 4Runner build

Nice truck!

I have a 2001 sr5 with the fat flares so it was a bit different than you have but also had that same annoying bolt head grabbing the tire lugs. It actually started to cause some damage to the tires so I ended up just removing the bolt. Havn't needed to replace it.

What kind of cross bar are you using at the front of the rack? It looks nice and low, which is where I want the rack to sit. How tall are the spacers you needed? I am thinking of building a full length rack and need an additional crossbar option. Thanks.

Sorry all for taking so long to respond! Been busy and had not been keeping up here. For the cross bar I am just using the Yakima 48" with Q Towers? I think they are called. Almost exact same setup as the rear two (besides being fixed not adjustable). The reason it is so low is because of the slant in the roof and because I mounted the Q Towers further out on the sides rather then inline with the other two cross bars. This was done partly for strength reasons (closer to the corner the stronger the roof), but mostly because there were some pre-existing holes there from the previous owner and I didn't want to drill more holes then I needed.

I looked long and hard and couldn't find any prefab options that would mount the rack any lower. Your best bet for lowering the height of the rack (if your not building your own crossbars) is in how you mount the rack to the crossbars. The way I have it set up now, it sits pretty high. If you are interested, I will get some pictures this weekend of how I did it and maby try to explain how I will someday lower it when I get off my lazy butt.

If this is for your '02 4Runner (well, all 3rd Gen 4Runners actually), Yep--Tacoma snorkel: ARB p/n Part Number SS170HF. And you also need the Tacoma intake tube that is inside the fender (replaces the 4Runner one that's in there). Its part number 53807-35020. Supposedly some of the earlier years 3rd gens had the same tube already...but your '02 won't.

You also have to do something about the power antenna if you have it. The most popular thing to do is to pull the power antenna out and replace it with a non-electric assembly and a whip style antenna. I read one other thing where a guy flipped his power antenna around or something. I pulled out that crappy electric antenna assembly and went with the Tacoma whip antenna. Works great for me. Antenna Assembly is part number 86300-35090, Tacoma Whip antenna part number is 86309-AA040. The antenna assembly comes with a silver antenna so you don't need the tacoma whip unless you want a black whip antenna.

(Good Thread on YotaTech for Whip Antenna info)

Other than that, it fits right up and it didn't seem much different than other snorkel installs and that ExpeditionsWest link is A+++++ so def check it out.

No need to ditch the power antenna. I kept mine... just be patient, and don't get worried... you can't get AIDS from your truck (Only your knuckles will be bleeding)!

You have to roll down the pass window, open the pass door and reach your hand in through the gap... push it past the sheet metal tabs that will cut you... position the snorkel on the tube then hold the snorkel in place with right hand and tighten the rear bolt with left. Then you can slip a wrench in above the tube for the top bolt and tighten... 1/8 turn at a time. Then tighten the bottom bolt, which is easy, put the fender back together and you are done. The only thing you will have to do is slightly bend the power antenna mounting plate towards the engine compartment, and it will fit... be careful not to damage the dust cover on the antenna motor. I guess this is harder than I thought... the next time I take my fender apart, I will take some pics of mine. Took me three hours to do the work, three weeks for the scabs to go away. Glad I still have my antenna.

I was planning add a snorkel to my wife's 2001 Runner this spring. I got one from previous gen Tacoma. It sits in my basement since Christmas.
Didn't know that I need Tacoma tube.

Use plenty of di-electric grease... you want it sealed and you don't want to have to get in there more than once. The goal is to be able to put a plastic bag over the snorkel and have the engine sputter out!

It has been quite a while since I have posted anything on my truck, but I really haven't done anything to it for quite a while. However, the last few weeks it has cooled off and I have been able to work in the garage with out melting, so I finally got off my butt and did some work to the old girl:

Crash bars or what ever you want to call them, tied into sliders

Non-skid along the top of the sliders to make it easier to use them as a step.

Over head lighting and kitchen table. The lights are operated by a switch on the side of the hatch, table isn't finished yet but will be supported by cables coming down from brackets on the side of the tail lights.

Some serious pinstriping there. Reminds me of my old tacoma in the manzanita :(.

Haha, yeah. People actually comment on the pin-striping before almost anything else. I'm rather proud of it too, shows the mark or a true field vehicle, not just something for show (no offense to those with shiny paint jobs still...) :victory:

When did you move to Arizona??

The pin stripping is badge of honor. :victory:

I was born and raised here in Prescott, but have been gone for 4 years while in the Coast Guard. Now I'm back! :victory:

And yes, it is a badge of honor that I ware with great pride.

Ah yes, the Toyota 4runner Green. I love it, but MAN O MAN does it ever show any spec of dirt and every single scratch. :victory:
Truck looks good, especially with the pinstriping. gives it character.
