A 4.3 Vortec in a series???

What axles are you going to run? The 205 only has a 1.99 low range. They are great transfer cases but a little overkill size wise. I'm not sure you can stuff that long of a drive train into an 88.?? Sounds interesting. It's cool that people continue messing with these cars.

700R4 + 205 has plenty of crawl ratio. It basically has 2:1 which is what ford explorers have. A couple of my friends have those trucks and they do just fine on the trail with the automatic gearbox.

But yes, the 205 is a big, heavy hunk of metal. I know there is a 3:1 low range conversion but the 203/205 is still popular, especially behind anything that is putting out some serious power. Also I forgot the price of the 3:1 kit. If elbow grease is free, I think the 203/205 is still cheaper.

Also maybe look at the Dana 18 or 20? Forgot which one. Swap in Bronco gears and take off!

Ive started a conversion on a series rover and am shocked at some of the suggestions im seeing given in this thread. I cant see how putting in a none original t-case would be cost effective, the cost of the goofy driveshafts would more than make up for the adapter cost of using your allready proven stock t-case. If you use a none factory t-case what kind of angle would your rear shaft be? some sort of compound angle im sure.
The Dana 18 is not an upgrade to the Series t-case and the driveshaft will run into the cross member.

Keep the series t-case and do your home work on the tranny choice as you will quickly find your drivelines to be the problems.

Cheers Ed

Yeah, I'm thinking that the stock Rover t-case is the way to go, that way I won't spent a fortune on custom drivelines, and create linkage nightmares. I have an extremely limited amount of space to work with, being this series is an 88". The other extremely limited item is the budget!!! If I can buy a 435 for a few hundred, sell my GM adapter to help fund a t-case adaptor, and get a re-programed ECM, I'd be in business!
Thanks everyone for your time and advice!

The transmission that you need is a SM 465 , 4WD 10 spline out put shaft.

******T FIRE! That 465 is a beast! I'm sure nothing can break that. I'm sure it weighs as much as three Series transmissions too

Look around. There is a company that specializes in converting the ECU's over for "stand alone" applications like this. I think for like, 100~150 bucks they'll make your engine run without all the extra sensors (VSS is the big one).

Keeping the EFI will make the engine perform great. Once you get it running, pay the $$$ to take it to the shop with a dyno and get it tuned. You'll have plenty of power (and A LOT compared to the 2.25!) and reliability. Engine will sound great with a cat-less

I'll take a look on the Internet for that. I'd think keeping it efi would be the sweatest deal
Thanks

If you find it post it. I am looking at this as a future swap on my D2. We have the 4.3's in our 3/4 ton vans at work. When they arrived, I figured they would be inadequate for the way we use them. They are worked hard and some have almost 300k miles on them. The engines have been great. The auto trannies, not so much. They do seem to live longer after a rebuild and an external cooler is installed.

sorry i have been at SEMA for the past week. the 4.3, 700r,np205 worked just fine the rear drive shaft on mine with toyota mini truck axles and 4" mini truck lift springs is 22". i pushed my motor as far forward as i could this put a gap of about 8 inches from the the back of the heads to the fire wall. everything so far on it has been great but i did have to notch the frame a 1/2 in on the passenger side to alow the side of 205 to fit but i welded another plate on the outside of the frame as well as the re boxing the inside of the frame. I just cant wait to get this thing done and get to start driving it. The ground up on my rover has been about 5 years and 45 grand so far and still not done. But she will be nice when she is done.

WOW:Wow1:

45 GRAND can we see pics of this Rover? sounds like you have quite the build going on. I just added up what my build will be and ill be in at half that price. With that kinda money i would have just bought two Defenders.

yeh it has been quite a build i have done every nut and bolt new and out of stainless lol i know overkill but thats the way i am. its bed lined in and under and everything is new, I didnt think it was going to be over 30 but i was wroung i have almost 10k in the motor but its 350hp and 400lbs of torque out of a 4.3, so after that it didnt take long to make up the other money hell paint was $1000 for the emron 5000 paint thats without anything else to get it on there. Would i buy a Defender, um no i have a Disco and cant get parts for her so i would not want a defender. I can walk into any parts store and get anything i need to fix my series anywhere in the world. I plan on spending a lot of time in my rig and dont need problems getting repair parts along the way. i realy dont know how to upload photos to this so when i figure that out i will do so.
