A quick run to Santiago Peak in Orange County, CA (pic heavy!)

My buddy and I finally managed to get out for a quick run up to Santiago Peak (5600ft) this afternoon. The route we took was from Silverado Canyon to the Blue Jay campground. It's rated as a moderate-difficulty trail and it is for the most part but there are some sections where the rocks are huge and then there are sections where you have to drive over sharp, jagged rocks hoping you don't slash those sidewalls :Wow1: - the trail is very narrow and hard to let the opposite traffic by. But we lucked out due to the rain in the forecast there wasn't much off-road traffic. A few trucks did go by and the custom is whoever's on the inside drives their truck up on the side of the hill since the other guy might fall off the edge.

Vehicles:
Buddy: His 2001 Tundra 4x4 TRD, completely stock and meticulously kept since he bought it brand new. Riding BFG Rugged Trail tires.

Me: Honda Ridgeline, 4WD with 4000 miles on it. 2" spacer lift for a total of 10.4" GC. Riding stock Michellin LTX M+S. We were both running P-series tires but that didn't stop us from roughing them up on the sharp jagged rocks :costumed-smiley-007

Weather: Well it is SoCal so usually there's not much rain but we're expecting some wet weather moving in this week and the forecast said 20% chance of rain later in the evening. We were hoping to beat the rain and be done before dark. The last few minutes were completed in the darkness of the night but that made it even more awesome and luckily there was no rain either. In fact, there was hardly anyone else out there, probably because of the rain forecast.

Overall it was a great trip - we both felt we needed it :victory:

What a nice Tundra! Who is the cool dude that owns that?

It was nice to get out and "escape" the concrete and glass, if even for a few hours.

Did the Ridgeline see any wheeling or was the whole trip on the rocky road? I'm very interested to see how the Ridgelines perform off road.

RU55ELL, it did see some wheeling (bumps, dips, ruts, washboards, loose dirt, steep climbs and decents) but the RL is not a great truck for serious off-roading. If you're looking at it from the off-roading perspective I'd suggest you look elsewhere (maybe a Tacoma). Its biggest shortcoming is its lack of 4Lo. The next one is the underbody components are not well protected and they hang lower than the rocker panels. With the lift kit it's *MUCH* better but the facts remain.

Having said that, it drives like a Honda Accord, it's roomy, it tows our 4000lbs travel trailer great thanks to the 122" wheel base and a wide track, fits inside the garage, has a huge in-bed trunk, can haul 1500lbs in the bed and can still go off-roading minus the hard-core stuff. It's a pretty good do-it-all truck, I drove it on Sat to get our Christmas tree, drove it to the trail on Sun and this morning I drove it to work (100 miles round trip) in pouring rain.

Nice pics! I just did that route on Sat. and ended up camping one night in Blue Jay. Great route and I love the optional rugged turn-offs which I took advantage of.:smiley_drive:
