AA1PR's M416 Trailer Build & Adventures

Ok so I bit the bullet and picked up one locally.
Even though I was originally gong to buy a M101 off Rovertrader, [the national gaurd was up here fixing the roads and realized it was more (larger) than what I needed]

The guy I got it from had a service manual and records of all repairs in a binder. This trailer originally came from Plattsburg Airforce base, about 100 miles from here. Looks like the redcross got it & the seller acquired it from them later on.

had no issues getting it registered either

this may be a bit smaller than what I want but here is my project nonetheless

Here are a couple of short videos:

I will add more photos/videos when it is light out to show what I have to work with...

Looking forward to your build.
I thought a M101A2 was big too, but they appear in proportion behind a full size truck.
Keep the pictures coming. Nice trailer!

getting there....

I am sure it looks alright, however I am disabled and rely on my son to hook it up for now
the other issue is that I am storing it at my parents, and an M101 is too big for their jeep fully loaded. whereas the m416 is perfect a win win

Ok so its not perfect by any means, but solid enough I have no doubts
I got my little Mikie to do the dirty work tonight...
Interior floor, there is a dark brown & a light tan in the floor through all of the scratches & what not

My son also got the interior side panel spots addressed with the grinder wire brush & those coated as well, by the time I went out to check on him @ 6:30pm EST it was too dark to get a good photo of all he accomplished

still have to eventually think about what I am going to do or need for a tailgate & cover, those will be later

My comparison of Rust Shield vs POR15

Our thick textured interior of the trailer now

My daughter working on sanding

Ground clearance
DSC_5736.jpg

Our rough sanding shows the various layers of paints of different colors, it is not rust as previously thought, just paint showing through it must have peeled or cracked off & they kept covering it with additional layers, even though there are some small spots of rust mixed in there. The rough sanding allows the POR15 to grab hold. Not worried about it being perfectly smooth, as my intention is to cover the outside with the bed-liner as well.

And finally our finished coated side

Tomorrow we will Herculiner the sides we did today will warm(er) weather presents itself, soon it will be too cold to do any work like this

That's really great the kids are getting on board and pitching in...nothing better than a family project!

Best of luck with the build,

Pat

Oct 9th Update

Oct 9th, my son started off sanding the rear & front of the trailer and applying the POR15 sealer, then we went to go take some autumn scenic photographs since the trees are ripe here this weekend, the sky, trees and temps are perfect !

After a couple of hours drying time, he then proceeded by giving the bed a second coat of Herculiner, after sweeping out all the leaves…

Added coating to both sides, plus front & rear of trailer as well

Not too sure now that I like the look of the lining on the exterior of the trailer, I guess I don't have to worry about tree branch scratches etc

Now we need to work on a tailgate and lid/cover for the trailer.
Come spring time we will work on the undercarriage

Tailgate added

Ok to complete the trailer a bit more we finally added a tailgate.

for this I opted to go with 1/4 aluminum diamond plate.

now I dont have to worry about stuff falling out the back etc

photos later when I go back

the next & probably not last thing is some sort of cover for the trailer

scoured the forum & found a few interesting ideas I may contemplate & try

Also changed out the mil lights for waterproof/submersible lights, even though they need to be raised in my opinion

Looks good.. Quick Question... what wheels are you running and in order to run those wheels, did you remove the parking brake assembly, wheels hubs etc or did you swap out the axle? From the looks of it, it appears you are using the stock axle, just with no brake drums/baking plates. Let me know. I am interested as I would like to get ride of the 8.00x16 dry rotted military tires and run some radials on a bit wider wheels.

Thanks
Jeff

They are 15" Jeep rims, the brakes are fully functional via the hand brake only.

I commented on the tires in your thread...

I would have loved to get the original rims & tires, but here in VT I can't find any

really would love to have the leaf over the axle one day. but it sits level behind my yukon as it is now & can't see changing it unless I lift my suv further

When/If I can find a 6 lug hub to fit the trailer, there are 3 original wheels that will come off this trailer....(yes, I even have the spare).

Just down in Mass.....
