Well, I'm still up too Jim.

ARB is in the bed of the truck, tent's in the garage, footlockers are packed and ready, got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and I'm wearing sunglasses.

When do you want to go?

That's funny, 'cause I was thinking Blues Brothers while I was posting (and please remember people, that no matter who you are, and what you do to live, thrive and survive, there are still some things that make us all the same. You, me them, everybody, everybody.)
.
When do I want to go? Now
When can I go? Next spring.
You know, sometimes being a responsible citizen sucks. Not that you're irresponsible, you're just retired.....I'm still striving to that bit. Work always interferes with fun....

Here's a photo I took today at the AEV booth at SEMA:

Looks an awful lot like this concept drawing I posted in 2009 :)

clearly they're different. look at the locations of the gas tanks :p

Just kidding... You did nail it back then!

Btw - any sign of the new 2.5" lift there?!?

Would be nice if they offer a shorter bed as an option, maybe pull 6" out of the overhang. Enough space for a realistic amount of gear, without the huge overhang.

This is a sweet rig. I got to see the cab in process at a bodyshop around the corner from my office. I was having a door dent repaired but couldnt help crawling around their shop checking out the AEV project. I will run down to the AEV main shop one of these days to drool over things I cant afford. I think that if Jeep were to make a production diesel version of this I might be swayed from Toyota.....might.

I'm hoping they bring it right back home after sema so I can drop in and give it a thorough inspection also. This is another one that would be absolutely delicious with a canvas topper on it. But I'm too poor. :(

Indeed, there would finally be a Jeep worth financing, probably get around 30 mpg highway on 33's while towing a small trailer.

Exactly! It would be the perfect EXPO vehicle! I cant seem to figure out why no one has jumped on this yet???

Every person at the EXPO events in Arizona asks the same questions when asked about long trips..."How do you afford it?" Usually the biggest expense of any adventure is the fuel. This would be a major game changer with a 30mpg motor that has already shown it's durability in other vehicles

Another SEMA photo - here's another take on the 4-door JK pickup concept; this one's from Wild Boar:

For international use, I would want a diesel, but I just have a hard time seeing the diesel as such a boon to those remaining in the US.

The cost of a diesel in US $'s based on Australian Jeep prices is ~$6,400. Diesel maintenance requirements are higher and more costly, whether you do your own mainteance or farm it out. Repair costs are higher. Diesel fuel cost are higher too, by 13%. And now you have urea prices! Reported mileage for the CRD in a JKU is 22mpg on the highway and around town on 33's, 11-13mpg off road with the 545rfe and 3.73 axles (from an Australian on the AEV forum) and from a J8 on 34's 22.5mpg mostly highway (reported by Dave Harriton: http://forum.aev-conversions.com/showthread.php?t=1053&highlight=Diesel+mileage)

So if the gas version averages, say, 18mpg it's a 24% increase in milage offset by a 13% increase in fuel cost; at 16mpg for the gas engine it is a 40% increase vs. the 13% fuel cst difference. - Then throw in increase maintenance costs...

My math is not up to the limit equation required to find the break even mileage of a diesel vs. a gas engine JKU, but just relying on acquisition costs you can have a hell of a trip of 30k miles in a new JKU assuming gasoline mailegage of 16mpg (which I think is a very conservative number - I can average that on the highway in my 5.7 VVT Hemi JKU, average about 13mpg around town and 9mpg off road) before you hit acquisition cost of the diesel.

The only thing I'd like to throw in there is that the 2.8 VM diesel currently in the export Wrangler will not pass the new Euro emissions standards, and will never pass US standards. This engine is a dead-end and (I think) will soon vanish.

The 3.0 from VM/Motori, however, does pass the new Euro standards, according to rumors has already passed US testing, and is confirmed to be coming to the GC in 2013.

In the export GC, that 3.0 currently is tuned for 241 HP (245 in some variants) and 406 ft. lb. with 28.3 MPG (US) Combined.
I know the Wrangler is a different vehicle than the GC and has the aerodynamics of a brick, but I honestly see no reason this sophisticated turbo diesel can't get 30+ MPG highway and towards 25 city. I also hope the mileage wouldn't really drop too much for 4x4ing.

Then, I think you would have to reconsider your reasoning above.

Fingers are crossed.

EDIT: I'll be very, very surprised if AEV don't at least attempt a conversion with this 3.0 into a Wrangler when it shows up in the GC. It could be a pain in the *** and a dead end like the older GC-> Wrangler diesel swap, but I feel like they will at least try. If it winds up in the export Wrangler, then it must be a relatively straight-forward swap, I have to imagine. If it can be done relatively easy, I see no reason they won't offer a conversion kit like the HEMI ones (unless they know Jeep is going to offer the engine from the factory in the near future...).. Of course, that's just my gut feeling.
