That is why I was asking the height. Seems like folks use everything from 10.5" to 13" in height. I'm going to error on the lower end since I'd like to be able to sit up and move around a bit if sleeping inside.

Did your drawers hit when extended? Were they sagging? I would've thought that the 3/4" height above the deck would've been enough. Surprised that you needed another 3/4" to clear!

I did some measuring and with 13" the deck that extends forward towards the front seats is flat? With that said I'm going to build mine at 13" tall.

Still going strong at 242K. With two seasons on the drawer setup it's still working good for us. Just got back from a road trip to Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks.

The Gardiner Road was in Yellowstone, it's the original 5 mile wagon trail to get into Mammoth from Gardiner.

I'm going to get this thread caught up!

April 2015 we took a trip to Whistler. Managed to find some muddy spots on our quest for a non commercial sled hill.

June 2015, took the kids on thier first back packing trip to Mirror Lake. The last few 100 feet of the road were really washed out and narrow, more pinstripping!

Sept 2015, Worked moved us to Oahu! The Landcruiser was shipped over. We left most of our camping gear behind, decided we could live without that stuff for a few years. We'll never be more than an hour's drive from home. Here's one from the Ka'ena Point Trail.

Back to the Build

March 2016-
Sometime after the Ka'ena point trail (1-2wks), my wife calls to tell me the Landcruiser won't move. They are on the freeway, going to the airport to pickup my Mom. Dang! I drive out to meet her. Realize something is messed up with the front axles, they've been leaking for a long time now. I limp it to a parking lot with the center diff locked.

Turns out the axle C-clip popped off, and the axle slipped inboard and has been grinding the splines. I jerry rig it with a bolt in the center hole to get it home. Tired of the grease spray everywhere I buy two remans from autozone with lifetime warrantees. Install them. Notice a leaky seal, probably from my work, replace the seal. Notice the new axles didn't come with all those little metal flanges that mate up with the diff seals. Take everything apart again. Put it all back to together again. At this point now, I can swap an front CV axle in about a half hour.

The island has a few trails, most are in the NW tip of the island. Ka'ena Point is a flat trail along the north shore. Peacock flast is on top of the hill and there's trails up there from both sides. Everything takes some sort of permit as it's military or something. So far we've just got the Ka'ena permit. We visited Ka'ena on a dry day and it was a simple bumpy drive. There was evidence that in the wet it would be a completely different trail.

So June we get back from 2 weeks in New Zealand and after about a week the Landcruiser makes a bad grinding. The front pinion bearing is toast, wobbling around, clearly the front diff lost too much fluid. Since it's Hawaii, every shop and dealer is 3 weeks out and expensive... I pick 4 wheel parts because I can walk there from work and they offer a flat rate for front diff rebuild with ARB Locker. :wings:

Well after a lame job by 4 wheel parts, ARB not fitting since they ordered the wrong shim kit, and rebalancing front and rear drive shafts I think the pinion shaft is bent. Could've been by the initial oil loss. I slapped the go pro on and noticed the pinion flange is uncentered.

If it's the crush sleeve and the job just needs to be redone that's simple, If the pinion shaft is bent that's harder to find. 2wd is fine right now until I can track down a replacement front diff.

I like the simple drawer setup! I need to get around to doing something like this myself.

Did some time in HI myself. Ka'ena point trail in the previous 100 about 9 years ago...

It's good to hear it's open again. They closed down while we were there because many people were being irresponsible.

That picture is about 100yards from the gate.

Love your trip reports! It's great to have a young family; the kids grow up too damn fast.
