Any 7.3 gasser owners?

I have 33k on my '22 F350 crew cab, standard bed, 7.3 with 4.30 rear end and stock tires - non-Tremor, so I think they're around 31-32". This is my second 7.3 truck and while I considered the diesel this time around, I am happy I stuck with the more simple gasser. I average 12-13 MPG on road trips typically driving in the mid 70s. My last truck ('20 F350 with 7.3) was identical but with 3.73 gears and got maybe 1 MPG better. Mine is a daily, carries random stuff in the bed from 100 lbs to 2,000 lbs, and occasionally tows lighter enclosed an open trailers. I still think it was the right choice for my needs. Probably could get away with an F150 but I'd rather be able to grow into this one with a camper or an eventual car trailer.

What are you looking to do with the truck? Will it be driven every day?


Yes it will get a flatbed with an Aterra camper. Full time second home. I have had diesel and know what they bring to the table. Lot of people like the price and simple of the 7.3.

Wanted some real world answers

Flatbed, 2.5 inch lift, 37's, 4.3 gearing, full front bumper, Bundutec Hardside camper... unadjusted speedo is saying 9 mpg which is likely closer to 10 mpg. I routinely tow a raft or jon boat. I drive faster than most (remeber the unadjsted speedo??). When I am not towing anything I am almost always going 80. Yes, that is with the camper on. I will ease off on long uphills but the 7.3 gas engine can handle it just fine.

Look, I work. That means I leave Firday after the buzzer hits 5 and beat cheeks to get somewhere cool. I leave Sunday and need to get back home to get other house chores done that were not done the previous week.

Yes, the fully loaded sprinter vans, subarus, tacos and runners with roof top tents give me dirtly looks when I blow past them. I also drink beer. I wait until I am home. The couch does not come to me so I race to get to the chores and then the couch. I do not want Inbev to go out of business.

The deal on these engines paired with the 4.3 gearing is they do what they are designed for. They are a good in between but are never going to get the fuel economy a diesel engine gets. The ten speed helps and this engine is way more efficeint than my old V10 in both an E and F 350. If you are going to be hooked up to a large 5th wheel on the weekends along with an equipment trailer all week go diesel. If this is a "secondish" vehicle (don;t really have to comute in it ever day) then the 7.3 gas is really nice. I had an old 7.3 diesel back in the day as well. Woke the neighborhood up every morning and choked them with blue smoke. The modern diesels are so much better but I learned to hate the diesel smell with that rig.

Now if I upgrade to 450 or 550 I would probably go diesel. Camper creep I call it...

I had a 2004 F250 with the 6.4 diesel before my last F150. That was the crappiest most pain in the but vehicle I’ve ever owned.

Aside from the engine design issues which were catastrophic I learned that diesel wasn’t for me. I don’t tow enough and the fact that most gas stations have one pump that is often times
Occupied by an old lady taking a dump, buying groceries, lottery tickets and paying by check and coupons that I couldn’t fill up in less than 15 minutes.

I travel in remote Canada and gas is more available than diesel. I have almost 25k miles on my 23 7.3 gasser and it’s bomber so far.
 
I have a 2024 F350 Tremor with the 7.3 and 4.30 gears. I just drove from Seattle to Belgrade, MT and back late last week. When I left, the truck had just under 2,000 miles on it, so a pretty new motor.

Seattle --> Bozeman/Belgrade, unladen with stock 35's. Good weather, driving mostly 67-77 mph on I-90 and making frequent use of adaptive cruise. 723.3 miles and 14.4 mpg.

Bozeman/Belgrade --> Seattle, now with GFC topper (cab height), driving mostly the same speed except slower during periodic downpours, and bucking a headwind of 30 mph+ for seemingly almost the entire drive as a major front was coming in from the northwest. 710.5 miles and 13.1 mpg.

Overall, I thought this wasn't bad, as I've been used to getting about 15-16 mpg in my 2014 F-150 with Coyote 5.0, 4.11 gears, and 34" tires and the F350 is a much bigger, heavier truck with more power/50% more displacement.

At the end of this week, I will pick up the truck with a newly installed Carli pintop suspension and Falken R/T 37's, and will report back here once I have a meaningful highway stint, which should be w/in a couple weeks.

I’ve got a 22’ 7.3 on Carli 2.5” kit and Lone Peak camper. I’m running 305/70-18s though. I’m seeing 12-12.5 on the highway with it.

That tens of thousands I saved over a new 7.3 will buy a LOT of gas :LOL:
Whats a new 7.3 going for these days? 50k? 60k? More??

For what its worth, I picked up our (used) 2011 6.2 6-speed Superduty with less than 120k on it for just $16k
We have near 160k on it now, and average 8-10mpg heavy with the big camper, and see anywhere from 10-14MPG empty.
Its rarely empty ;)

Two vehicles, semi-similarly equipped (from a form factor and wind resistance perspective).

'22 ram diesel 3500 w/ 4WC Grandby (8' model), 2" thuren lift, 37s, 3.73, sitting around 12k averaging in the high 12 to low 14mpg, mid 11 when also flat towing a 100 series.

'22 (I think) Ford 7.3L gasser 2500 w/ 4WC Hawk (6' model), 3" Carli lift, 35s, unsure of gearing, probably closer to 10k averaging weight, 10-11 mpg no towing involved.

Similar terrain, similar driving speeds/styles.

Well, pulled trigger. 7.3 gasser with 22,000 miles. Got it so cheap hard to beat. Saved $35,000 from a new truck. Little more wiggle room to add on accessories. Tray and camper coming soon
What the payload on that thing? Single cab F350 gasser has to be pretty dang impressive!

I’ll be your huckle bearer! I don’t mind used trucks at all, but with the mileage I drive I’d be replacing them far too often if I didn’t start at new. That said you won’t catch me dead in an 11-16 gasser. I prefer trucks that can get out of their own way. The 17+ 6.2 was a big improvement over the initial offering.
