Any practical use or need for heavy chain?

I've kept System 7 (the transport chain mentioned) in my recovery kit for over 30 years. Used it in all the situations mentioned as good places, never in the others. Well, not never. As a kid my dad and I would pull people out of snow banks with chain, but that was before the advent of real recovery straps. But he did know enough to not jerk them.

Thanks chuck45, that sounds like some good points never thought about how shocking would effect the chain. Saved me a few dollars too!

Grade 70 should be a yellow - goldish color. I have never seen grade 70 in that gray metal color. You wouldn't catch me using that to pull anything too heavy. Could be used for general use though.

Yeah, like I mentioned in my orginal post, I have no reason to use it for recovery situations. I have that covered. I would be using it more around the garage and house for other tasks that might damage my otherwise expensive straps.
