Anyone Living in Snow Country?

...But: thank you again Kurt from Cruiser Outfitters. I spent a bit of time at TerraFlex Plus today... I spoke with Sam after the first fellow had to ask questions. He knows you... and said thanks (for the referral). Talk about a wealth of knowledge re: JK's!...

Glad you were able to get over to check them out. They are top notch folks that know their JK's, no two ways about it. They send the Toyota people my way and I gladly send the Jeepers over there way :D

coming from the east coast ( now in colorado ) i am no stranger to salt. so much that vehicles turn bright white all winter. It does put a hurting on the metal but since your not driving on the roads daily and in fresh snow usually plus having the super arid climate we live in, it will be a long long time to do any damage. Just do a summer time undercoat touch up and thats about all you can do. that and regualr waxing for the paint. Touch up any bare metal spots.

Photos Added of TeraFlex mud flaps (removable)...

Flaps1.jpgFlapFront.jpgFlapsFront2.jpgThanks voodoojk. It took 5 years to rust out most every bolt under my Commander. And no, I don't drive daily, but I always drive when there is fresh snow...

Anyway..... For those that wanted to see the TeraFlex removable mud flaps... here they are. I realize they are a specialty kind of thing... not for most folks. Needed for my use. So there ya go

Crummy pics... it's colder than a witches body part out this afternoon... but you get the idea. My jeep took me to town today... got him all washed up, back up the mountain (no slush - hasn't been snowing much) However, once I turn off the highway, it's all snowpacked roads up to my cabin... and the sides stayed clean... time will tell when the conditions get tougher as to how well they work on the slushy salted paved roads. They (TeraFlex Plus) installed them front and rear. They remove by pulling the pin inside the wheel well. The metal bar is free (not attached) except to a T-shaped thingy that's welded inside the wheel well (where the pin attaches).

wrap it up..?

Just read through this and had a thought. Maybe having a quality vehicle clear "wrap" applied could help keep the paint from being beaten to death as well?

Looks like you live past Deer Valley in Gaurdsman?

Maybe I'll see you around if you're venturing in the Cottonwoods

I also live on a mountain with a lot of snow/slush/salt/sand.

To keep my Defender from rusting out beneath me I have swtiched to waxoil instead of undercoating.

You might want to google it and see if you like it. So far it has been good for me.

Cheers

Jeepdreamer, thanks for the info!

Frank... thank you - fortunately the area in front of me (as I look out my cabin) is designated Wilderness. However, there are trail further up canyon and over when the road is open...

TopGun514 - I'm in Silver Fork (Big Cottonwood)... up the mountain a bit - I'm north facing... If you know where that is... I do have a good friend that lives in the last house up Guardsman's pass... before the road bends right and then closes... (winter closure) Where are you?

Ray - thanks for that. I'll google it for sure!
Googled.... interesting... you say you *switched*.... what if a vehicle is already undercoated?

You can call a local waxoil shop and get them to look at your Jeep and the undercoating and let you know what they think.

I like the fact that the oil penetrates rather than coats, so you can get it inside the frame rails, etc.

So far it's been 3 years of heavy road salt (and not much chance to wash underneath in the winter as we live in a little cabin on the mountain and the weather is below freezing from November to March, so we don't do any washing there, and the truck is too tall to fit in the only car wash in the nearest town). No rust issues yet, at least from what I can see climbing underneath and poking around.

I am probably due for a touch-up now though, since it's been three years.

Carolyn - 'm coming to this thread a bit late, but I feel your pain. I am in Denver and try to get up to the mountains about once a week. I am on my second JKUR, after trading my 07 when the 12's came out. The door hinges on the rear doors were beat to hell. With my '12, I removed the rubicon rails and installed some sliders that extend out farther. So basically, whatever gets kicked up and thrown by your tires, will get blocked by the bottom of the rock rail. You could even go with aluminum rails like the ones from Nemesis; I've toured their shop here in Denver and they make some really nice, expensive parts. Their rock sliders are all aluminum. Now I know many will go poopoo to aluminum, but unless you are doing all rock crawling, these things will last forever.

Couple other thoughts...when its time for new tires, the Cooper Discoverer STT is an amazing and the best M/T tire I have ever driven in the snow. I can go anywhere on I70 in 2 wheel drive in a storm. Oh yeah, they also last forever...like over 50,000 miles with room to go.

I wouldn't be too worried about the under of the jeep, I was under my 07 jeep plenty for upgrades and fluid changes and never saw any hint of significant rust. I've never given an undercoating any serious thoughts, but know you have gotten my brain rolling. Just to let you know the drive shafts will get a layer of surface rust on them, but it is really nothing to worry about.

Ok, that my opinion...I could be wrong.
