That motor was one of the things that swayed me to my trooper. The Monty motor seemed very involved to do anything. Once done, though, the long interval between now and having to get in there again is a plus. All reports have it being a motor worth doing what you're doing, too.
Everything is a trade-off, tho. I knew getting into my trooper that it was going to be an oil burner, which it is, but other than having to de-gunk everything every 8k-10k and keep the oil topped off it seems to do just fine. Every motor has its "quirks" haha!
Definitely prayin for no busted knuckles, headaches or problem fasteners! There seem to be a lot of great, knowledgable Monty folks here on the expo, too.
Have to say that just like you, i found my jeep very easy to work on, but then again. I haven't HAD to work on my trooper at all yet. Hope your monty is the same way! Keep updating with your progress.

There is a procedure to test the coils. But you will know if they are bad. If all else fails, when you replace the wires, I ran mine over the top of the intake plenum and then replaced the plastic cover. It didn't look the best, but that was temporary before I pulled the engine to change the head gaskets, valve seals, and timing belt. I changed the plugs and wires in an attempt to fix the miss that two coils were causing. Needless to say, the wiring was so much easier to put back into the stock location with the engine out of the truck.

Finally finished it up this afternoon and she purrs nice and smooth like a new car. Still a gutless wonder compared to the old Jeep but so quiet and refined.

Glad you got her running well! I may need to request some pointers from you on this job, since you did it so recently. I'm going to need to replace valve guide seals and I'm debating between methods of doing so. Easiest, and least educational, being paying a guy for the whole shebang timing belt and all; most difficult, yet educationally rewarding, being being tearing the top end of the motor down and taking the heads to a valve shop. Not sure I have time for the later so we may need to discuss.

I only did plugs and wires along with the valve cover gaskets, so I'm afraid I'm of little use on the valve seals but there are videos on youtube covering everything you need to do on these engines.
