hmmm

 probably just missed you, I camped in Canyon sin Nombre, as it was dusk when I was coming down from S2, so found a cool spot and called it a day, then spent Sun am checking out Indian Canyon and hiking around with the mutt.

Maybe next time, though the Element doesn't have the clearance for some of the trails so it takes a while to get through

cheers

Sandstone Canyon is unique - sometimes one car width wide and 200 feet tall walls.

Here's a topo trail of the route. You can come in from Diablo Dropoff or through Split Mountain to Fish Creek. The sign at the turnoff left from Fish Creek has gone missing.

Sweet pictures!!!!

Lisa and I so wanted to join you guys but we were in the middle of a bathroom remodel. It was suppose to have been done on my Christmas vacation but I ended up getting really sick and spent a night in the hospital.

As TacoDoc said, we need to do an overnighter in March. We should have our new to us, Kamparoo trailer and will be itching to get out.:jumping:

Glad you guys had a great time.

Just as a demo for SWR and the non-gadget-carriers, here are some of the other things GPS logging can give you besides moving map displays:

Log of the lunchtime parking at the stream:

Display of groundspeed (blue) and elevation of the entire run:

can you drive up the "diablo dropoff"?

On the park map it is called a One Way......going Down the Diablo Drop Off.

I don't know what the park service would do to you if they caught you going up. I've never tried to go up because it's clearly marked and I do my best to follow the rules which helps us all.

Going up can damage the trail, especially if you have an unlocked rig and start spinning your tires all over the place in a panic.

Also...........

After we went down the drop off and the V notch at the bottom. Our progress to Fish Creek was haulted by a Jeep that was violating the "one way" rule. So there we sat waiting for him and even had to pull out for him to pass. I waved and was kind and didn't even mention it. But it's kinda just wrong.

If you look through my pics close you will even see my pics of the wrong way Jeep.

..........Good Question though

A group of extreme Jeeps I tagged along with once used to do this run the "wrong way" regularly. The leader didn't care about rutting the dropoff by spinning his 37's because he just didn't care about lesser vehicles than his. Except for ones in his group, who could always be dragged up the hill by the leader's winch if they couldn't make it themselves.

It was discovering that there were Jeepers like that mistreating Borrego that got me to shun them and find ExPo and folks who actually lived more with Tread Lightly in mind.

What's the deal with the camper top on your element? Is that an option somewhere or custom? Looks cool, I like it.

There is a thread here on ExPo about the Ursa Minor ECamper. A very unique concept with a ton of potential.

Great pics SWR & Roadie from your outing. All 3 rigs look like they are in their natural setting. Anza Borrego looks like an amazing place to explore right in your backyard. I'll definitely keep that area in mind when I find myself back in SoCal. Thanks for the temptation.

after reading your post and getting upset that i wasn't able to make the journey with you guys, i headed out to Anza this past weekend with some buddies to check the area out. I wanted to explore some of the "mud caves" in nearby tapiado canyon.

I managed to drive most of arroyo seco del diablo and canyon sin nombre as well as a few other side trails and into the swamp area of carrizo creek. What a neat area. I want to go back soon to complete the diablo dropoff and sandstone canyon.

Here are some photos from the mud caves of tapiado canyon. There are numerous ones that you can walk in, or crawl into with flashlights!
