Although that engine worked great in the Supra and Cressida and has been a popular swap with the mini truck crowd, I don't think it has enough umph to push a 55 down the road. They didn't nickname it the Pig for nothing, it's a heavy rig!
Probably gives up some torque to the original family of engines, but it has the HP to move it along at something exceeding stately. The 5M series wouldn't be worth messing with.

7M-GE; DOHC, 2954cc, 4 valve - 50* Included angle:

Config Yr HP TQ Bore Stroke CR
US spec NA Supra version:
7M-GE 86-92 199@6000 188@3600 83 91 9.2:1

US spec Turbo Supra version:
7M-GTE 90 232@5600 254@3200 83 91 8.4:1

Compared to: 2 valve OHV:
F 48-75 135@3800 217@2000 89 102 7.5:1 (3878cc)
2F 75-87 135@3600 210@1800 94 102 7.8:1 (4230cc)
3F-E 88-92 155@4000 220@3000 94 95 8.1:1 ( 3956cc)

First time I'd actually gone looking for numbers to compare. Not as much TQ loss as I would have estimated. Though it's about what I'd have guessed the peak RPM deltas to be. The low axle ratios will let the higher engine speeds work out nicely. The trick to making it work well in the slow speed stuff would be deep t-case gears.
All in all I think it's a good fit for the way I'd want to use such a vehicle, but it probably isn't a one size fits all solution.

I am interested in the specs of the IH diesel engine.

That's exactly the color scheme of Roseann's '78, which she still misses.

We bought it in pristine condition except for an odd engine noise (turned out to be cam endfloat) for $3,000, I think, rebuilt the engine, drove it for years, and finally decided to sell it to help finance our first house. We agonized over what to ask for it, finally decided to go for broke, and put a sign in the window: $7,000. Roseann drove it to work at the Summit Hut that morning, and as she pulled in the parking lot a couple screeched in behind her in a Jeep, jumped out, and said, "We're on our way to the bank right now! We'll be back with a check! Don't go anywhere!" Gone.

I can hardly wait to see this one done up right.

Here's our turbo-diesel powered '76 FJ55 entering Guatemala this past April!
