Autohome entry hatch adaptation?

I've been debating whether to go with an Autohome rooftop tent mounted on a minivan, or an Astro-Safari camper van. The Autohome allows you to move the unit from vehicle to vehicle, should you decide to change vehicles for some reason (accident, major mechanical issues), but the Astro-Safari allows you movement back and forth thru your living/sleeping space without going outside of the vehicle.
It may seem like a small matter, but in inclement weather, or for accessing a "sheltered" portable toilet in the middle of the night, the Astro-Safari has the edge.
I was wondering if anyone has ever cut a hatch opening in the bottom of an Autohome unit to allow passage from the vehicle it was mounted on, say, thru the sunroof? I haven't thought this through thoroughly, but the idea seems to have some potential at first "glance".
Has anybody tried this?
