oh now this is goooooood..
I like the track you took, and the idea sounds so simple on the screen..keeping to the Az/Mx border, no big deal :)
Very nicely done sir and I am looking forward to more.

Oh and good on your wife for being willing to go along on this adventure in our fear mongering media rich times.

Great trip, great report. Thanks for taking the time. We are doing a Southern AZ/Mexico to Pismo, CA trip next year that will be all dirt. Should be a blast like im sure yours was. Looking forward to seeing more of your journey Jeff.

I’m sure it’s been said before, but I have a thing for small towns that mark their territory with a big letter on the side of a hill. Oftentimes, they are timeless

As we passed through Douglas, I was again impressed by the mixture of old architecture this southernmost border town contains. Knowing we would be visiting town again, we hustled down the dirt track in an effort to find that elusive boundary marker. In the planning stages of this journey, the intent was to drive within a ½ mile or so of the AZ/NM/Mex border and hike to the actual location of this boundary intersection. I wasn’t sure what type of monument would be there, if any. A short hike over broken terrain to find out would be an ideal way to kick this thing off we thought. However, conditions on the ground were a little different than the maps I had consulted.

I worked in Douglas last winter...that census sign pretty much sets the tone for the whole town.

In fact I think I remember seeing that Tacoma roll through at some point.

Great trip! I admire your desire to go down there and make an educated evaluation of the situation with your own eyes.

Very nice! I can't wait to see some of these featured on the Overland Routes project. It should make for an excellent east-west AZ traverse.

Nice trip report.

So, from someone that has been in the area recently, how dangerous is it? I see you had 5 camps in that danger zone known as "South of the 8"... Is it substantiated? Did you feel threatened at all?

Over the many trips and many years I have tranversed southern New Mexico, Arizona and thru Glamus in Cali. (form El Paso to Cali) I have rarely had encounters with any supposed illegal visitors from south of a certain undrawn line in the sand. The events on which one or some ventured into my campsite I was never met with anything other than a humble request for water and food. I have found the border patrol sometimes more problematic than anything or anyone else. Federal marshalls nearly always have an attitude. None the less... an interesting tail. Over the last few years the El Camino is becoming more electronically montiored then the border trails along eastern Az and western New Mexico. The border patrol is the hazard!

I still think you are brave and I doubt my wife would let me go. She has been watching all the crap on the news. I am looking forward to the rest of your posts maybe even the tracks from google.
