Bad Propane Tank Valve?

The morning of our last trip.. few days ago i went to go have the tank filled up on the AT. Guy tried like 3 times. Wouldn't take. He said there was something wrong with the valve and there's air in the tank. We let the air out of the tank, but it never ended. It just kept coming. He said it could take 2 hours to get the air out and even then he might not be able to fill it. The other weird thing was we could turn the valve on the tank and let air/propane out. That's not right either.

Does anyone know if you can get the valves repaired or replaced on propane tanks? I know the tanks themselves are cheap.. but this is the oddball small tank on the AT Horizon trailer and it's painted to match our setup so i'd like to keep it.

Also, AT if you're listening... in case i can't replace the valve, what does a new tank that size run?

thanks guys

errr and why not....? usually when you open a valve, what's in under pressure comes out...

If its full he can't fill it......

If its under pressure how does air get in ? something here makes no sence....

You can get new valves, and physically change them, but I'm not sure on US
regulations.

Your local gas supplier may be able to help.

I presume you were hooking the tank valve directly to the stores fill hose ?

I meant without a hose connected. My 5 gallon BBQ propane tank won't let gas out if i open the valve. You have to have the connection made. Our small tank doesnt care either way. It's not supposed to let anything out without a connection.

That's what they were saying. If air is in, then the valve is screwed up.

It's empty. And now full of air for some reason.

Yep, connected to a commercial tank with fill motor like always.

It is true that new tanks are purged prior to the first fill. After that it is extremely unlikely that it would get "air" in it. I would question the expertise of the individual filling the cylinder.

If indeed there is a problem and it is a new style tank valve with the float. This float valve was mandated on refillable tanks less than ten gallons in size. It prevents over filling of the cylinder. It could be stuck. Did you try jarring the tank to free a stuck float? If it does not free to allow the tank to be filled it will need to be serviced. A large distributor should have a tank service tech. Amerigas does have one here. He is very knowledgeable and does have new valves if one needs to be replaced.

Henry, im going to to run the tank over to a true professional... i think the people i was dealing with were incompetent and i didn't have time that day to go somewhere else. I need my BBQ and C02 tank filled anyways.

I think that's a wise decision. A tank that has or has had propane in it cannot magically suck massive quantities of air into itself. I think you were dealing with a bozo.

The same crap happened to me!!!!! I kept thinking that it was the hose then the stove then the Q well if neither were getting gas then it was the tank.went out and bought a tank. if you want to keep you tank you are going to have to buy one then snake the valve off it.
