Base Camp Duffels

The North Face Base Camp duffle is my favorite duffle bag. I use it for car camping and even as check-in luggage when flying. The backpack straps makes it useful for hauling.

Note it's water resistant, not water proof. The zippers are the beefy YKK ones which I love. And the duffle bag material is very strong. I throw my ice ax, crampons, snow shoes, and other gear in my base camp duffle.

They are very good. Not 100% waterproof (don't submerge them for long periods), but certainly appear to be stormproof. Lots of Jeep guys use them strapped to external tire carriers and so forth. VERY durable.

I love mine but since I don't like a dirty camp try to keep them out of the weather/dust/de-icer/etc. Seems like once they get really dirty you get it all over you and everything else. I would probably put mine in a thule bag or something if they were going on my roof - but many dont consider that necessary. Also, they rarely go on sale, but keep watching the web. I have bought nearly all of ours at a discount over MSRP (usually 10-15% off if you can be patient. I never seem to find discounts on these during the peak travel months or during a typical christmas season)

I have been looking at duffles as well. amazing what a waterproof one costs and even the ones that are not waterproof are kind of expensive.

I don’t have any experience with the BAD (Best American Duffels) but I do have a large TNF Base Camp Duffel and I am very satisfied with the durability and quality of this bag. I also have two Patagonia Black Hole bags. They have a simpler design with less straps and webbing on the outside with a potato shape to them. I like these bags because they don’t get snagged on anything when flying the airlines and I rarely strap stuff to the outside of the bags. The North Face bags are truly tougher material than the Patagonia bags. I have had they bags for over ten years and used them on many trips to Colorado, Wisconsin, Poland and Iceland. I would try BAD bags if I was in the market today they look stellar. I think Cory has some and has done a review. I hope he chimes in.

Here are some inexpensive storm duffles. I actually have these and they are surprisingly robust.

I bought the BAD one last year after seeing the review of it in Overland Journal.
Plus it is made not to far from me in my state.

Very nice bag, and heavy duty.

Chiming :D

Just saw yours.
Yes, I think they are very high quality.
The size I bought is very good for a week +.
I could really use the next size down for just a weekend camping trip.

Another option is Red Oxx bags. www.redoxx.com they were at the expo and are made in Montana by Jim Markel. They were very rugged and made in the US! He is big in the Safari club world. Phone # 888-733-6999

I have had a Patagonia Black Hole for years. Has been frozen on Denali for a couple months, kicked by camels in Morocco, and drug all over the US- it is still kicking.

The TNF BaseCamps are very nice too, I like the top "flap" opening as opposed to the full length zip on the Patagonia.

Anyone ever order from duffelbags.com? Quite a few nice looking water proof bags. Also might want to check amazon and big agnes sells a nice rolling waterproof duffel
