I know it may seem un-american but I can't drink coffee. I have tried and just cannot do it. Sooooo setting around camp I drink tea and hot coco. I have several great tea's I like but I would like to see some good cocoa recipes. (not packet mixes) What do you have????

Well.....the hot coco that I covet is the Cadbury packets that I found in SCO/UK. Made with milk, it is the best damn stuff ever. If I could only get my hands on some more of it here in the States.

My wife cares very much about the quality of her chocolate. She drinks ghirardelli hot chocolate.

I am also a cocoa drinker, and very interested in this thread. Unfortunately, I have little to add to it.

My basic recipe:

1 cup milk
1 tbs cocoa
2 tbs sugar
pinch of salt

Heat the milk, but do not boil. Mix the cocoa, sugar, and salt together, then add to milk.

For cases where I won't have fresh milk, I'll add the equivalent measure of powdered milk (1/3 to 1/2 cup, depending on how rich I want it) to the mix, then just add water when I'm ready to prepare.

For extra flavor, I'll sometimes add a small dash of cinnamon, and/or chipotle chili powder.

We use the Nestle packets while camping. Less fat/sugar/sodium than the other leading brands.

Mix a packet in with your espresso some time if you like coffee. Go ahead; nobody's looking...

I am a coffee fanatic but particularly spending the day behind the wheel and resisting the tempatation to not over-drink it has yielded many days of tough results particularly in the morning with a sensitive stomach. So nothing wrong with hot-cocoa or even better yet tea IMO for a day behind the wheel. Nothing "bad" but I have been noticeably uncomfortable in the mornings for even a couple hours in the morning related to it... Something about camping sometimes brings it out, not sure why...

As much as I love at least that first cup of coffee in the morning...

I prefer the hot chocolate that you find in Hispanic groceries. It comes in large bars like baking chocolate, and you drop it in milk, and bring both to a low simmer. Works fine in my JetBoil.

yes I got some in Kenya this year and loved it, great stuff. The bar stuff that someone talked about sounds good too.

Heavy whipping cream on a very low simmer in a 2qt pot and shave thin slices of dark chocolate into the cream with a sharp knife and keep stirring. Let cool and enjoy.

*Low fat use half and half or milk.

*Don’t like dark chocolate use milk chocolate.
