Black Rock Desert

I flew back to Reno last weekend for a quick trip to the Black Rock Desert and High Rock Canyon with the Battle Born Cruisers of Northern Nevada. I have wanted to do this trip since I first saw High Rock a couple of years ago, but I don't live in Reno anymore. So after Cruise Moab I drove to Reno and left my 4Runner there for the summer so I can do some trips in the Sierra Nevada and surround area. This is a beautiful area with nearly unlimited potential for further exploration. Just bring plenty of water. :)

Some other members of ExPo were on this trip (lowcrwln, Rusty_TLC, and expressomon) so hopefully they will chime in with their impressions as well.

Hmmmm...first the sand dunes and now this! :D

I first heard of the Black Rock Desert in one of those Time/Life "wild places" books some time in the mid-80's. After that I really wanted to go there but couldn't figure a way to get it done.

Then in 1998 after returning from the Balkans I finally had the time, the money, and the proper vehicle (1990 Mitsubishi Montero) to make the trip, and it was great. I also hit Death Valley, which has become one of my favorite National Parks.

I would be interested in hearing about how the BRD has changed since they made it into a semi-wilderness (or whatever they call it.) When I went there in 1998 it was still wide open - in fact, I'm pretty sure I saw the tracks of the Thrust land-speed record setting rocket car, which had set the speed record less than a year before. And I certainly saw the remnants of the most recent Burning Man.

You're not supposed to drive into the springs!:ar15:

We stayed on the trail, that is the water crossing at the top end of the canyon. There actually wasn't that much water this year compared to the past from what I have been told.
