kerry.... Thanks...

I did a search of the net using:

Nuvi 780 lockup topo
Nuvi 780 freeze topo
Nuvi 780 problems topo

And I only found 2 sites that mentioned problems. The same two you found.

And the second one said they believed the problem was with the SD card and not the GPS. Switched to a different card and it worked fine.

I'm not too worried about problems with the 780.....

Mine came today.... 2 days after I ordered it.

Been playing with it for the last couple hours. It's pretty awesome.

It's got a lot of features. I got the bluetooth paired up and working. I'm uploading all my MP3's right now. Already changed the vehicle icon to a Jeep.

It's already alerted me to the local weather advisory.

Just for kicks I've plotted a route to Trona for my Death Valley trip in April.

It has all the features you would expect and then some.

The music player has shuffle and repeat as well as pause/play, next/previous.

IDK, a whole bunch of other stuff..... Lemme know if you have questions.....

Yesterday I ordered one also. I actually prefer paper maps but I did buy and use a Streetpilot when I was traveling in Europe about 10 yrs ago mainly to benefit my wife who was navigating.

can you upload a pre-determined route from teh computer? I can't seem to do this on my 255w...

I can't say for sure as I haven't done it yet, but I belive you can. Technically it's over my head at this point also as I just got the unit.

But I believe this is what you are talking about.......

One of the features this unit has is custom points of interest (POI's).

You can purchase maps from Garmin or other third party sellers and upload them to the 780.

They have something kind of neat called "Mad Maps".... They are tour maps that you can upload(buy) of different interesting road tours. What's cool about them is the GPS acts a tour guide explaining different points along the way. Mine came pre-loaded with Route 66....

They also have trip-planning software that allows you to plan trips on your computer and send the data to your device.

I am assuming that the 780 has good reception. The problem I have with my handheld Garmin is that it loses reception when the forset starts getting thick. Otherwise I have been happy with Garmin.

I was planning on an external antenna..... I don't think I'll need it tho after using mine for a while....

Rattler, you had the older etrex though, right? That one has a patch antenna that wasn't exactly great in the first place. I don't know what the 780 has but ones like the Oregon and the 60 have better antennas and software that keep reception way better.

I had a plain Etrex at first but I have been using an Etrex Legend.

I got a survey from Magellan today I completed and I may win one for doing that. Hopefully it would be better than that POS Crossover I had.

Registration is open for this year's UP trip Oz! I know you want to but there won't be any meet-ups on the Gay beach. We are heading west towards the Porkies instead. (Wow that sounds bad!)
