Brand new HZJ mine truck.

Found this LandCruiser sitting on the ramp at the airport in Edmonton, probably waiting for a ride to the Ekati mine. I took some pics on my B/B I thought I might share with you guys. I don't know too much about it, but the company that modified it for mine use is here:

http://www.millertechnology.com/

They also mention they are a supplier of OEM landcruiser parts, crate engines, diffs etc. The truck appears to be 2010 model. I'm assuming it's not street legal. I think the body on it would be perfect for an overlander.

sorry about pic quality.

If it was in Edmonton, it might be going to a lot of different places. Chances are it is not going to Diavik or Ekati. They can only ship heavy stuff up on the ice road in the dead of winter.

The brakes are mounted in the axles. This is because of the harsh conditions in mining, they are sealed brakes. Also, very useful for underground coal mines where hot brake parts can cause a fire/explosion.

First three pics from a underground gold mine in Washington State.

Next three are from the Diavik Diamond Mine in the NWT of Canadia.

Last three from the Ekati Diamond Mine also in the NWT of Canadia.

From the looks of those pics it doesn't look as though it's destined for an easy life, probably couldn't have picked a better vehicle though!

Actually they ship heavy stuff all year long by air, First Air's LC-130 can haul 48,000# and I've seen them load a 3/4 ton into a 737 - but they had to dismount the box to get it around the corner

Has anyone made one of these street legal?

Can't happen- at least not in the States. But you CAN get used ones in now- from the late 80's. Tough part is that these things are mostly work trucks, so to find one that hasn't been beaten 3/4 to death is a challenge. There's a place down in Texas that is bringing in nice looking 40's and 45's with B or H diesels. They could probably find you a bushtaxi, too. Here are some of what you could get from Europe....
