If you found the 4Runner suited your needs and you have little or no need for the bed then stick with it! I struggled with much the same but, decided the bed is too valuable for my needs. The best of Luck!

I also hunt and have basically destroyed my 4runner's interior by putting recently shot deer and pigs in the back. We heat are house with wood and hauling it around in the 4runner is also problematic.

Have a dog who recently had diarrhea in the 4runner.

Fairly certain this guy would find the bed "too valuable" as well! :D

I'm not a Chevy guy, but my friend just bought a sweet Extra cab V-6 4X4 Colorado. It even has a rear electric locker.

Drove one checked them out. Not a gm guy either. I liked it. Tacoma 4dr has bigger doors gm has a thing for tiny skinny 2nd row doors. Interior materials are weak sauce the canyon is better regarding interior.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I went to the dealership this week with my shortboard and two pairs of skis. Got some weird looks from the salespeople trying to fit my gear in the beds of various trucks. I could just barely get my 6'2" inside a bag stuffed into the bed so that it would fit with a topper on. Wife liked driving the short bed better as well so we are going to go with that option.

Now on to another important issue. How do I run a rooftop tent AND still carry longboards? (9 feet long).

I'm nearby (Redwood City) and I've been shopping around for a DCSB for a couple weeks now. Let me tell you- DONT buy in the Bay Area. The markup is insane. I've had good luck getting better deals on vehicles as soon as you drive a couple hours out of the bay. We almost exclusively buy our cars from Seaside or Salinas, as the prices are almost always at least a couple grand cheaper.

Kiri I found pretty much every Toyota dealer in our area was owned by one Auto Group based in LA and they were price fixing the region on various models keeping inventory hidden and using their sisterdealer AutoTrader listings as arguments to not negotiate. Complete utter BS!!!! Even had one sales guy tell me I had to go 600 miles out of their covered area to find a better deal. F -EM!!!!

I walked. Bought used private sale. Your right Toyota Dealers around here are priced way too high.... States Attorneys office needs to grow a pair and go after the Auto Groups!!!

Good choice with the short bed. Screw the RTT and just use a regular tent.

I have a DCSB with camper shell, and surf regularly. My shortboard squeezes in diagonally, either a 6 or 6'2. Longboard is tricky but I just let it hang way the F out. I have a 9, so about 3 feet is hanging out. I don't have that far to drive though. Biggest worry is the door to the camper shell just bouncing around wide open.

Just get rid of the Longboard!!!!! Shorter and fatter is way more fun.

I also have a dog, and having him away from the interior is so much better. Some camper shells have the option of a sliding window for the cab, so I just open both windows and he can peak his head in. But my truck doesn't smell like a wet dog!!! Also removed one side screens from camper shell, so he can poke his head out 1 side of the shell.

I hear you on longboarding. I only do it to be social with friends who never learned how and to paddle out with my wife. Was thinking of putting the tent on the cab and just strapping boards to a rack on the shell. Maybe get a high top shell so that the rack on she'll would be level with the tent?

Think that would work?

I have always wondered if you have an RTT, do you have to leave it on the truck? How big of a pain is it to remove and put back on? I'm sure they are bulky and heavy.

But if your not using it during the week, does it stay on the truck?

Or, Can you somehow strap the boards on top of the RTT?? Like with some tie downs / come along things????

I have a Tacoma and if I didn't have some use for the bed I would get a 4Runner. We had a 2005 a few years ago that we sold to pay for her grad school and we miss it a lot. If we were to pare down to a single vehicle the pickup and her '02 Jetta wagon would both go and be replaced with a 4Runner.

RTT's are not too hard to take off/on, but that is not something I would want to do weekly. Depending on how its mounted, its more than likely just a few nuts/bolts. I'm sure one could make a quick release bracket which may save a little time, but then again you need to make sure you have room to store that beast in the garage first.

CaliCamper... if you dont file a complaint, the SAO probably isn't bored enough to go out looking for issues. More complaints, the more likely it'll get addressed quicker.
