Camper on my 130?

I think it is pretty cool. I don't like RTTs- if that setup on a 130 fits your needs then go for it!

Am I nuts for thinking about this? I dont like RTT's and aside from backpacking and back country ski trips I a getting tires of sleeping on the ground. This might not look the part but I am VERY tempted to go this route. What do you think?

No, you're not nuts.
I think if it meets your needs do it.
Why would you even consider sticking with an RTT or ground tent, which doesn't meet your needs, when that would, just because some people don't like the looks?

Please wait, or feel free to give me a call, 704.650.6318. I am in route home from Ca after getting a Flip-pac on my Power Wagon. The main reason to visit though was to discuss a Flip-pac for a 110 wagon, or 130 etc. I had the white 130 currently at LR Roaring Forks, and that is waht started this quest. I feel I have an alternative that is both functional and cosmeticly pleasing. Convinced enough I have driven 3k miles in 3 days, and headed to SLC then home for a total of 6k in 7 days- w/ two days barely driving d/t business. Sorry to ramble- brain dead. Dendy told me of this thread, and felt compelled to share albiet a tad prematurely....

noooo. i thinka flipac would be awesome though.

can you not sleep in your 130? i would be wiling to bet there is a lot of room, and i vaguely remember you saying you slept in there on rainy nights anyways? you could also leave the tailgate open if it isn't long enough...

The Alaskan is about twice as heavy as the FWC. The funky RV siding
is very light and easy to repair.

It's not just the aesthetics - it's the concept of a 700lb tent! :snorkel: That's an awful lot of weight and size to commit to. If you converted over to a pickup bed, what about just using a standard size shell and putting a sleeping platform in? Adults go on the platform at the height of the bed rails, then the kids can sleep underneath. This is actually how we camped most of the time when I was a kid. Dad sealed the shell to the bed and then put down some kind of water resistant cushion/liner thing and carpeted the floor and sides. With lights and a secondary radio it wasn't bad, and we still didn't have to mess with a tent. fwiw

No, you're fine !
I wish there were more options, too.
We need a fixed roof solution, but I like the FWC very much.
Since folks are getting all concerned about aesthetics, and there's nothing wrong with that ;) . . . then how about one of these ?

I have been in contact with them and I am sure you would be the first here in the states and, well, you would have to send your car back over to Blighty for the upfit, but it would be sooooooo nice :D

Cheers,
Frank

I do sleep in mine and in fact my son and I just got back from a few days of gem hunting in the Mojave Desert last week and we both slept in the back. I am just under 6' and my feet hang out the back just a tad when sleeping. If I am alone I can sleep diagonal and close the door but usualy just hang my toes out a bit. With a family of four our sleeping is usually done out in the open without a tent during the summer or in a tent for rain or winter camping. I am looking for a solution to get rid of the tent and get us all in the truck together. I like the FWC set up as I would be able to cook inside. The Flipack is nice but does it fit the 130? Also the Flipack has no cooking set up inside does it? My current configuration has a fold down table with awning. If I lose the current configuration I want to be sure I am not giving up too much of what I already have.

Well you know what I think.... ;)

And the haters who worry about aesthetics, more often than not, are hatin' from inside their cozy home office... I can assure you that on the first night you're nestled in your camper, cooking dinner while the boys are playing cards on the bed and the Saline Valley wind is howling outside with rain on the Inyo's being imminent, the last thing you'll care about is the aesthetics...

For the uninformed and non-users, it's not a "700lb tent." It is a fully self-contained camper with a bed, stove-top, furnace, fridge, sink & water tank, with lights and a solid roof. All that at roughly half the weight of a traditional truck camper. It also sets up quicker than any ground or roof top tent on the market, except for the Columbus RTT (and I had one of those too - we liked the FWC better).

All the comforts of home, built to go off-road while retaining excellent resale value. Judging it based on perceived "unappealing aesthetics," says more about those judging, than it does the product.

Doesn't look like it would slide out too easily, which was one of the criteria I believe. Or at least a notable feature he liked.
