On Guam when we ever had a party we used a Coconut husk :Wow1:smoldered real good and kept the bugs away Just put a few charcoal brickets on the inside of the husk and let them burn.

Anybody else tried these with favorable (or not) results? It seems enviro friendly and would move around with you.

I bought one of the off clip on units and tried it while fishing Saturday morning. I've since spent about 10 hours this week researching methods to relieve the itch from all of the over 100 bites I've been able to count thus far.

The two who fished with me used Repel w/ DEET and Deep Woods OFF. Neither of them incurred any bites.

Needless to say I won't be buying any of the refills for the clip-on.

I have used the Clip On for the past two years, it worked pretty good against skeeters for me.

This year I am trying something different, clothing made to repel skeeters and flies.
I use to use DEET long ago, I hate putting on any kind of bug spray weather it is a spray or lotion.

I have a couple of these shirts.

Corey. The BearGrylls/Craghopper shirts are nice but they tend to run a little small. Their medium was like a small to me so I went with a large and it fit perfect.

I know it sounds weird, but Avon makes a product called Skin So Soft. It is lotion that doesn't smell to fragrant, but repels mosquitos. Also for some reason most bugs do not like dryer sheets. I always spread them around my tent and keep a few in my pockets.

Weird yes, but they work!

I've heard about the Skin So Soft also.

I have used the Clip On for the past two years, it worked pretty good against skeeters for me.

I work for SC Johnson who owns Off. I have seen the clip-ons in the company store but have never tried one. A couple co-workers have with mixed reviews. From what I understand though, they have updated the design to work better.

One of the people that has attended the UP Overland trips with us (he is on here too IIRC) also worked for SCJ. He was actually the person that raised the mosquitoes and donated his arm for the first Off commercial years ago. He told me the mistake most people make with an Off spray is not rubbing it in and around. He also said that they may land on you after a few hours but will not bite.

There s a little bottle (only a couple ozs) of Off Deep Woods Sportsman that has like 90% Deet too. I wish I could remember the misconception Dave told me about Deet. I will have to ask him again this year.

US military recommends treating clothing in Permethrin and DEET on exposed skin for optimal protection. Clothing treated in permethrin are good for dozens of washes before losing effect. In OIF II, we were given military treatment kits which consisted of a small bottle of permethrin concentrate, and a ziploc bag to put one complete uniform in. You put the uniform in the bag, dumped in the permethrin, added a quart of water, closed the bag and let is soak for 24 hours.

All the bug treatment clothes you can buy are basically pretreated with permethrin.

Cutter Back Yard is a very low dosage solution of Permethrin (read the active ingredient).

There is nothing more effective than permethrin and deet combo. period.
