CB antenna mounting

but my point was that the "expert" used the terms 8' and 108" interchangeably and some pretty simple math shows that they're not.

There was also a certain tone to the article that I found disconcerting, the "people's lives are dependent on my expertise" stuff in particular.

He made some good points, could have been better.

That's all I got...

John,

Here is why I appreciate how the CB guy is trying to help folks out. Yes! It happened to me!

Hey you all thanks for all the advice. I'm going to rob the stainless whip off my Land Cruiser for the time being.

John I have a story with a happy ending also. Myself and some buddies came across a lone dirt bike rider out on the far side of Jawbone canyon one weekend. He had crashed his dirt bike and broke his leg. He said he had been out there since the day before and hadn't told anyone where he was going. So we made him comfortable and I went out and found a bluff and keyed down. At that time I had a Cobra 148GTL with all the goodies plus a 200 watt kicker. Now this is were the story gets different. The person who answered me was in Indiana I told him what was up and he phoned the California Highway Patrol and I told him to tell them to meet us at a certain mile marker on Hwy 14. Went back to where my buddies were and tooled back down to the highway. Sat there for a bit when the Patrol cruiser showed up and that fellow was off to the hospital.

A quick approximate formula for a quarter-wave in open air: 246/(freq in MHz).

So, rough midpoint of CB being about 27 MHz, that gives 246/27 = 9.1 ft or 109 inches total. For a whip antenna like a CB antenna, the radiating length is everything from the point the center conductor of the coax leaves the shield, including the spring and parts of the mount. If any part of that radiator is behind the metal ground plane, it's less efficient.

For you hams who have some test equipment, it's interesting to 'grid dip' an antenna to see where it resonates (without coax attached).

I don't recall what the actual wavelength is of CB but the antenna length would be a fraction of this (1/4 wave, 1/8 wave, etc.) ...chop...
