CC for wilderness camping/hiking...

I'd suggest making the trip into the Portland metro area. The Gun Broker (Clackamas and Tigard, both have a great selection of handguns,) or Keith's Sporting Goods in Gresham are good bets.

And +1 for the Sig P220!

Having sold them for years, personally I would not own a Taurus. They are soft. Every couple of years some mag writer-whore writes an article about how great they are and how much better they've gotten. Same old story, re-hash the article again in a couple years......

For a limited use sort of thing, maybe. NOT for a personal defense item.

 Sorry to butt in, but-

--Are you talking about the legality of carrying a handgun, or the wilderness survival ability ???

--WHENEVER I go to the boondocks (bi-weekly) I always carry my S&W 1911, with two extra mags on my belt--

--

--It's quite capable and Stainless Steel and EXPOSED

--I'm just prepared for my/wife safety-no matter what

James,

Whatever you choose, invest some thought and a few bucks in quality leather to carry the gun. There are many options, and you need to think about how and when you will carry.

.357 revolver gives you some ammo choices. You can use .38 special, .38 +P and .357 magnum.
I'm with you on the ease and reliablility of revolvers. I have a S&W 686 .357 magnum with 4" barrel and my wife has the S&W airweight .38 special. Both are good shooters and the kick is minimal. You need earplugs when shooting the .357 magnum rounds. They'll ring your bell a bit.

A word on this (OK, several). One of my two old bosses at the gun shop (now retired) had been shooting since his days on his Orange County, CA High School's Position Rifle Team. He had Tinitus (sp?). It is not fun. Wear ear plugs regardless of what you are shooting, even .22 Shorts. If you notice any deafness, ringing, or anything else abnormal about your hearing after being subjected to loud noise, you've done damage even if the 'problem' eventually went away.
Loss or reduction of hearing just isn't worth your possible percention of "looking like a goon" or what ever. The greatest revenge to those who ridicule you for wearing ear protection will be to whisper to them in a couple years.

Safety issues:

You should always wear safety glasses and earplugs/muffs when shooting anything for multiple times. I wear eye protection always (even though I have 20-20 and 20-15 vision). I would be lost without an eye.

I do not do so well with hearing. I always wear it at the range, but almost never when hunting. Occasionally I'll wear the Sonic type plugs while in the field.

Just use your common sense.

Pretty big fan of glocks. I carry a 22 at work and a 23 off duty.

Though it is hard to argue with a Smith 340 PD as a backpacking kind of fire arm

I reccomend find several people that have firearms you may be intrested in and go shoot them all.

THe 345 like most rugers is a tough reliable pistol. its ergonomics are kinda wierd but you cant beat the price.. I Like the M&P 45 better personaly, and you can carry more ammo in it and it has adjustable backstraps.

There is some good advice on here but I think one important thing to look into is how well you can shoot the pistol. Id rather see some one Hit what they are aiming at with a 9mm 4 or 5 times then miss once with a 45 or 44.

There is a story on the net somewhere, where an elderly couple shoot together every weekend. they both carry J frame .22lr and were confidant enough to carry them during their outdoor forays. they had to draw them and just the sight of the fire arms in scared away their would be attackers.

Be safe.

Are you recommending he takes the gun he likes most after shooting the owners? :jump:

Have you had a chance to investigate whether you can legally carry a concealed handgun in those areas you intend to hike/camp?

well

National parks are a definite no-go. State parks vary. Use your own judgement on whether or not you should carry. It's your life on the line.
