In my other 4WD truck, I mounted the same 2m/dual-band radios to the roof and ran all the wires and coax above the headliner and inside the A-pillar (but not the GPS to radio wire yet):

Is that the body for the remote face mounted on the headliner, or is that something else?

With the remote faceplate models, can you run the mic from the radio body, or does it have to come from the faceplate?

Depends on the brand and model. Some models have the mic running from the radio body while some models have the mic running from the remote faceplate.

I don't know if I want to spring for the dual band remote faceplate model or a cheap one-piece.

I can't imagine not having the remote faceplate, it opens up so many more options. As for dual-band, I regret not spending the extra $100 for a dual tranceiver every time we drive the Ranger in a group. Being able to use simplex and monitor a repeater simultaneously is well worth it IMO.

I can't speak to the other manufacturers out there, but both of my Yaesu's will let you plug the mic in wherever you like, faceplate or radio body.

Pardon the dusty truck. This was taken during one of the fishing trips.
The faceplate and speaker are mounted on a piece of SeaBoard that was shaped to drop into the forward console tray.

You are correct, it's the "body" (base unit) of the Kenwood TM-D710A, the face plate of which is mounted on top of the dash.

Some really nice stuff here. Its amazing how far a little thought and creativity will go.

And some, well, difficult situations. :ylsmoke:

And some of you guys have A LOT of radios. :Wow1:

I have the Wilson 75wxst that hides away when not in use, and the 60" whip comes off for day-to-day. I'm trying to figure out the Ham right now. I don't know if I want to spring for the dual band remote faceplate model or a cheap one-piece. Aesthetics are important- I like the interior to look stock if possible, and uncluttered especially when I'm not using the radio.

With the remote faceplate models, can you run the mic from the radio body, or does it have to come from the faceplate?

My Icom 208 allows you to plug the mic into either the base or the faceplate. Kevin, don't forget the old axiom, "Form Follows Function". The quality of radio must include capability and USABILITY. I find the Icom frustratingly complex and the buttons obtusely labeled. Most of that is because months go by between each use, and I tend to forget how to use it. Still, I'm generally good at buttonology, usually, but not so with this unit. Dont obsess over the install and settle for a unit that won't make you happy.

Here's some old pics of my installation in my XJ. Just recently bought a KJ and haven't installed radios in it yet. The overhead organizer is called a Shelf It. Don't think they make them anymore. Plan on putting a dual-band rig in the KJ with a remote head.

From the left, 2 mtr Yaesu, scanner and a remote speaker.

I strongly discourage the mounting of anything in the roof/headliner. There are multiple incidents of people getting killed from nasty head injuries inflicted in a rollover.

Keep thinking I wanna do something silly like get my license and put a 2M in place of the CB, but most of the guys I ride with have no idea what a 2M is..

Yes, they still sell them, at least for Broncos. I don't know if I like the whole attic-storage thing though.

Nathan,
I hear you on the too-many-buttons syndrome. My Yaesu HT has the same fault (feature?), but I'm learning. I talk to my Dad (who has the same model) a couple of times a week on it, so I'm learning the functions a little better.
