I once vowed to not return to Michigan after my last trip to the war zone known as Detroit. You have made me recant! I have added the UP to my list of places to see....hopefully sooner rather than later.

Great pics, more please!

You know, I live in Michigan. As difficult as things are in Michigan, this really emphasize one of the critical positives.

Shamefully I've never been to the UP. However, reviewing the pics is excellent motivation.

I love it.

Get on up here!

What a great story. It's threads like this that become more than a trip report and more of a trip rapport. As usual another fine tale added to the annals of the ExPo community.

Trip rapport, I love it! Thanks bud!

Yep, most people associate MI with Detroit which is funny because to drive from Detroit to where I live is the same amount of time as driving Detroit to Washington DC and I am only in the central UP. Michigan really has a bunch of beautiful areas, northern lower Peninsula is pretty epic, especially Leelanau county. There is a very diverse nature to the state and it's topography. Obviously water is the dominant element but the feel varies from Carribean like beaches to stuff that looks like the coast of Maine or Oregon.

Great rapport :sombrero:

Having lived in the UP I can testify to its beauty! I hope to make it back some day in the fashion described here.

Well done!

Amazing report, as always. Some of those pictures I would never have guessed were taken in the UP. It's beautiful up there. The beaches can be breathtaking.

Just stunning... Thank you!!

Now, I wanna, wanna! THAT is what I want to do, PLUS trail volunteering! I've done a couple of volunteer days myself in the Ouachita mountains in western central Arkansas and they were FUN! So long ago...

I'll certainly head up there some day. But I have a trip of my own to make some time this year. It won't be like yours, but it'll be the first trip out of state in 10-odd years!

Again, wow!

Thank you for the rapport....good work, beautiful pictures. Makes me want to visit the UP someday. This is exactly what I scour the ExPo for; cool places to visit backed by a storyline and photos that pretty much forces me to add these to our ever expanding "Places to Visit" file. Thanks again...

Nice trip report. Enjoyed and thanks. Where did you get that kayak holder ? I've never seen that before ? Possibly you made it ?

Ha ha, it isn't really a kayak holder but it works suprisingly well for my creek boat. It is a Gen II Trasharoo. Was trying to figure out a way to haul my boat and since I have the RTT the roof was out of the question. This just happed to work perfectly and I still had room for trash in that sucker!

Thanks everyone for the kind words and as always, if anyone is interested in some places to check out or advice, or if you are coming up this way and I am around, would love to meet up, shoot me a line on here. Or actually, if you click the link in my signature, we have a discussion forum on UP Overland where people are sharing trip reports, details, and other stuff all related to the UP region. It is growing into a nice resource.

Hey Kristian,
Will those delicious looking blueberries :drool:be past their bloom for the UPO2010??
J

Well, last year the UPO trip was a week later and they were perfectly ripe then.... however we are having some freakish weather this year and everything seems to be about an entire month ahead of normal. I would guess that if the blueberries are still out, they will be a bit scarce but that is a guess. They are definately peaking right now as are the thimble berries and rasberries as well. Weird summer! Lake Superior is as warm as I have ever felt it too and it isn't even August yet so that is a huge plus as well. Granted wind and weather can change that pretty quickly but I'd say you guys are in for a real treat for the overland trip.

awesome report!

My wife and I are actually planning on coming up the UP for our 1-yr anniversary trip. We're both originally from the SE-MI part but now live in Elgin.. We've been using the various trip reports here and on the upoverland site as guidance.. Now I need to pick up a good map showing the various trails in the UP. Any recommendations?
