Cooking with bears

New guy here,

I'm thinking about putting together a camping rig. I'm curious about kitchens and bears.

I live in Northern California and would like to camp in CA, OR, & NV.

As a kid in scouts, when I went camping we hung food from trees or put it in bear boxes depending on where we were.

Been looking here but haven't really been able to find much about dealing with bears here. Are your rigs able to stand up to bears? Do you guys avoid bears by only camping in the desert or at the beach? Do I have the right sub-forum for this?

It was not even Photoshop.
I did this a few years ago, and it is probably in one of the other bear threads.
I used MS Picture It!99, a very old program.

I have PS7, but I do not know how to do that type of stuff with it.
I use it mainly for turning a JPG into a clear GIF.
I have that mastered :sombrero:

I am not even sure where to start here. One of my grandfathers would say "if ya dont know, dont go" but the other would tell ya that bears in those three states are not that big a deal. Be smart and put your grub away at night but camp and explore any where you want in those three states with out much worry. With the exception of a few areas heavily frequented by people bears will not bother you. I had a bear eat frosted donuts next to my head at a Shasta Lake campground, and in yosemite there was an incident not to long ago BUT as a general rule, Black bears are way more scared of you than you... actually based on this question I better not say that

Elements 7 and all you can do is change a JPG to a GIF... hahaha Good program though

Some developed capmgrounds have bear boxes to put your food and ice chests in when not in use or at night.

Not to criticize but that sort of thing is why we have a problem with bears. Once they taste food or trash that we NEGLECTED to keep away from them, they keep coming back, losing their fear of humans.

I've never had any problems with bears when I locked food in my vehicle, or when I've been on canoe trips or backpacking. But in those instances I've always made sure the bears had a real hard time getting to it. The biggest thing with bears is to use common sense. Last fall during bow hunting season I stumbled upon a campsite with coolers and food left out in the open in a campsite. There were no people around and there were no precautions to prevent bear activity. Duh! The guys left boxes of cookies and stuff out on a picnic table for crying out loud (they actually even left a bow case and a bunch of arrows outside). Using bear proof containers and hanging food from trees out of reach of bears and locking it in your vehicle is a good idea. The saying goes: Be bear aware.

They're tough and gamey so it's best to do it slow in a smoker or a crock pot.
