Costs of owning a LR and MPG?

I have never used premium fuel in the 1997, it runs fine. No different betweem the 1997 and the 1999 which gets premium(its the wifes).

Like Ron, I've owned the '94 since new. It's never had a tank of premium in it's life...though it does get a steady diet of corn fed, Iowa E10 that's advertised as 89 octane.

I bumped the timing to 8 deg BTDC when it was new and haven't touched it since....watch, it'll fall to pieces on the way home tonight :)

I cannot argue with TAW ( I know, it's "J", not "A") as regards the market value of the old Disco. As it's body parts return to oxides of AL and FE, it's running gear may yet find its way into something that more closely resembles the Series / Defender...sometime after the 109 project is done :)...yes Ron, it's still in your neighborhood.

I currently have a 96 Discovery.

Lifted and bigger shoed (if that exists) I have used 91 octane the first 2 years of ownership. Now I use a combo of 91 and 89 depending on my money I can say that I get about 12-13 mpg of combined city and highway.

I do change the oil every 3K miles and keep a new air filter every 4 months along with engine cleaning.

I can say that a Land Rover Discovery IMHO it's not a costly vehicle to maintain if one know how to use a wrench. One thing I like about it is that it is a straight forward vehicle. Have a set of standard and metric tools spare oils and fluids and maybe a drill and you can just about fix anything on the truck.

They are rugged vehicles and they do require more attention than most cars however most parts are very easy found and can be fixed on the spot

PS I didn't know the first thing about how to lift the Vehicle and now I can call myself a suspension specialist lol.

Of course another solution is a diesel - My old Series IIA diesel 109 is slow but it gets mid-20's and the Tdi Defender gets 23-25 mpg running around town.

i have a 92 thats now a parts truck, and i drive daily a 91 classic. the 92 needed a trans, ordered a used one from car canibal and before it was delivered found the 91. so now i have a parts truck, a spare trans and the 91.
all that sure makes owning one easier. parts are not that expensive, im sure not anymore that parts for a tlc80. do your homework, parts can be sourced from many other places and cars. (rangerovers.net) many parts can be used that are not specific to rovers. as far as classic parts becoming hard to find, ford doesnt own rover anymore and there are thousands of them lying around in salvage yards. body and trim parts are the only thing that may become a problem (think far in the future). the classics and the disco 1 are much easier to work on than later model trucks. on my 92 and the 91 you can literally almost see every bolt on the vehicle.
driveability;
comfort, its ok, probably not anymore so that a tlc80
with a 2" lift and 235-85-16 tires it does wander some, bodyroll, YES
mileage, 14 stock, 12 now with lift and tires
insurance, cheap
reliabilty, very
but its a rover, theres always something leaking, check engine light on, rattle, etc.. somewhere. the website above is very useful. i didnt know anything about rovers before i bougt the 92. that was the first website i found for info. the first thing i read was "if you are the type of person who likes everything to work properly all the time then consider another vehicle"
love/hate... thats for sure

Ok sounds like its a toss up, and the same things that plague to 80 also trouble the Rovers. So basically you say TomAto or TomOta. Thanks guys

Except you have better axles, and arguably a better engine+-. Plus you are familiar with your Toyota and you know its recent service history.

To me the answer would be obvious- Keep the Toyota and build it- MPG be damned. Or buy a BJ42 or something if MPG is a real issue that is keeping you from being able to enjoy taking your truck on trips.
