CTapia 05 Tundra 4WD Build Up

JCMatthews,

Just received an email response from ARB USA, in summary they are interested in testing/measuring and see what it takes to make this work. They are currently working on getting ready for an "Easter Jeep" event to Moab. They'll be reporting back after this event with some findings. I'm excited that we can get them to at least take some measurement between the two and compare.
I did see the build thread by 02tahoemd, very cool and this make me even more determine to make this happen. In the interim.. where's my credit card, gotta go and order my junk! :sombrero:

Easter Safari is over by a few weeks. Has there been any word as to the bumper fitting. I would really like to know.

Guys,

I apologize for the long delayed response to the ARB LC100 combo project. Wife's mom past away recently and needless to say, it has not been easy. Regarding the ARB Combo project, it appears that ARB at least managed to perform a test fit on on the bumper. I'll paste below the response from ARB directly. I had inquired about them sending some picture, but I never received them.

HI Candido,
we actually had a truck in here earlier today and had an initial look at fitting a 100 series bar onto the Tundra. We believe it's possible, but is going to require a fair bit of fab work to make it happen. Specifically, the mounting brackets on the bar are both too narrow for the Tundra chassis and their width creates clearance issues with the lower edge of the bumper. We think we can get past those problems by cutting the forward edge of the tundra brackets off then welding on a new L shaped section that attaches to the bumper. That's issue #1.

Problem 2 is grill clearance when the hood is raised. It's clear that a big portion of the reason the Tundra Sahara bumper hangs out as far as it does is for grill clearance when raising the hood. With the 100 series bar we'll need to remove the antenna mounts from the top tube of the bumper as they hang back about 2 inches which should allow us to move the bar closer in to the front fascia and the returns nearer where they need to be. The big question is whether it will be enough and that remains to be seen. As it is this looks to be a doable change, but the process will take some time as the next step will be cutting and welding to make it fit. From there we'll evaluate whether the changes can be processed into production parts to make an early Tundra deluxe bar. Given the current mix of parts we believe will be required and changes to those parts I do not believe altering existing 100 series bumpers will prove practical for the average installer so we will be looking towards potentially creating a new part number in the future.
Thank you for your patience.

I then went to ask about overall dimensions/clearance/fit and here's there response"
Hi Candido,
working back to front on your questions a bit. Realistically I expect it will be after the 4th of July before we can devote the time and bring in the required equipment to complete the install simply because we have a number of other priorities in vehicle development ahead of the Tundra bar.

As for the dims on the bar to the Tundra, it's really a good fit both around the headlights and for width as they are both essentially right where we would want them. I don't see any changes needed in those areas at all. The only area that isn't quite right is the shape where the top deck of the bumper meets the headlight area and trim on the sides of the grill. It's not a bad fit, but the curves between the 100 and Tundra in those areas differ somewhat so there will be a bit more gap there then we would normally expect. All that said, there is no reason we can't make the bumper fit and as noted above I expect to make that happen in the next few weeks.

I would still like to attempt this project and having dinged up my front bumper is more of a incinitive to have this done. My issue is going to be that I don't have the equipment to fab up/modify brackets to make this work, so I'll have resort to local fab shop to help with this. I'm still a little concern about the overall fit, but I guess this is something I'm going to have to risk and try.

Anyone out there with fabbing skills want to be the "guinea pig" and see if we can make this work? Would be a great to have someone offer a "conversion/modification" kit...

I"ll update later with status on my truck mods., thanks everyone!

Thanks for the update and sorry for your loss. At least they got back to you. It sounds doable and I agree it would be nice to have a 100 bar for our trucks. I wish I had the tools and time to make it work!

Thanks DereK24! Regarding the ARB, yeah it was looking promising when they agreed to a test fit. I got a few things going on now, but may still pursue this. Anyone else there want to take the lead on this?

I wonder if the FJ80's are around the same size? There is someone selling an ARB bumper on my local CL for cheap. Might be worth it fitting it up?....

Also sorry to hear about your loss. Thank you for the response, it sounds promising that we might get a kit to make the bumper happen. I can't wait.

I apologize for dragging this out, between work and the body shop that I had originally taken, the project got dragged out. Long story short, the bodyshop had it for (3) weeks, so I decide to pull it from the body shop and got to a local Fab shop. Dropped it this past Monday and by Tuesday morning and I was good to go! Fast and top notch work! Between Tuesday and yesterday I got to paint the custom brackets, mount the Warn HS9500 winch, wire up the fogs and turn signals. I posted some update/pics last night on TS but didn't get around to posting here, so here's the update:

A few things to consider/note: The 100 Series Landcruiser frame rails are about 3" farther apart and narrower (meaning the Tundra rails are wider/fatter). This resulted in having to modify/fab (cut off the section that mounts to the frame rails) and fab custom mounts. The custom mounts attach to the frame rails using the stock (2) lower bolts on the frame rail and stock front bolts (The ARB would original only mount with the (2) lower stock bolts). We used the stock (2) bolts per bracket and the front stock screws. No modifications were done to the frame rails or the ARB bumper. All mods were done to the brackets, which makes it nice if I ever decided to go back to stock (sell).

The overall width of the ARB is a perfect fit with the Limited (maybe SR5 as well) flares. Due to the differences in the front facia/bumper area between the Tundra and LC100, you end up with a gap between the inner ARB and the front body area. I'm thinking of a custom thin sheet of metal, powder coated/painted to match would cover this.

The lower brace that secures the stock skidplate was kept and worked out nicely, The ARB ships with a small plate that covers and open area between the stock skidplate and lower ARB. Dues to the Tundra/LC100 differences, this plate will need to modified to fit (I haven't done this yet).

The front/back fit (meaning how far/close from hood area). This presented a challenge as bringing the bumper closer to the hood area, would mostly cover the gap mentioned above and would bring the side edges of the ARB more in line with the flares. This presented a problem with the hood/grill not clearing the top tube of the ARB. So we slid the bumper back, just enough (about 1" clearance) as the hood opens between the grill and top tube. This also meant that the top light/high lift mount tabs needed to be cut off in order to clear the hood/grill. These were cut off and sanded down to conform the round tube.

With some expose metal, I looked into powder coating. I guess there is no such thing as touch up power coating lol!!, so I sanded and painted/touched up the exposed metal area. I'll working on installing my set of PIAA offroad lights next and then wiring up the winch.

I believe this covers everything.. so here's some pics! enjoy!

I can't stop looking! All I want for xmas is......I can not believe how good that looks! The ARB's for the Tundra's are just too big, meaning they stick out too far and too low. The LC100 ARB's look perfect giving you more appraoch angles and safety! Great job again! Do you think all bumpers made for the LC100 will work for our trucks?

Thanks again Derek! Yeah I'm so glad that I did this. i was worried at first since no else had tried this and concerned that I was going to end with a big piece of scrap metal!
