Cummins swap

thanks all;; yes, I've spoken to the folks at Jeff Daniels, and wow, I am a diesel head, no doubt, but, just way too many mods to get there, and it drives the price way out of line, I love the idea of lots of torque @ 1600 rpms, but jeeze 3.07's replacing the 4.11's,, still means peak torque @ 60 mph, everything after that is diesel out the stack. On paper it all looks real good, practical,, ooops!! Long range expeditions means I want to travel @ 65 to 70mph on highway, and with the 4bt an ideal operating rpm would be around 1400rpms @ 65 mpr, unattainable without swapping in much taller gears everywhere. Then look out, the beauty of the low gearing of the rubi would be lost. I'll just be patient, and hopefull a bolt in kit will someday be available for the 2.8l Motori CRD. A much easier matchup to my driveline! Thanks all for your input.

Here is what they sent me (part of it anyway) about their kit. Look VERY promising! And if you compare the number of VM motors running around versus VW TDIs....well...kinda a no brainer!!

HPA Jeep TDI Project August 6, 2010

Thank you for continuing to follow the progress of this exciting project!

Our team has invested a great deal of time and effort in engineering this interesting package, and we are still on target for a September roll out of a completed project YJ TDI.

Some have asked, "How will this upgrade be offered?"

We have two packages in mind. One geared towards the DIY'er and the other, a complete package that can be installed here at HPA which will be a turn key solution when you provide the base vehicle.

In addition to the motor swap, the YJ is currently undergoing a plethora of exterior modifications in the form of body armor, roof rack, and suspension lift courtesy of Garvin, Metal Cloak, and Rubicon Express.

We are also pleased to announce that JP magazine is slated to be here at our facility later this month to photograph the build, at which time we will also release a library of our own behind the scenes images at that time.

Stay tuned...

Sincerely,

The team at HPA Motorsports

Bigger tires. Aftermarket gearsets for the 2.5-ton Rockwell axles under Mah Deuce cost about $2000/set (and there are 3 axles), but I gained a few MPH by replacing the stock 39" tall tires with a new set of 43" tall tires. My old CJ7 handled great on 40's, and you can fit 35-37's on just about any Jeep without too much trouble. Don't be scared to go big! With a diesel, there's really no downside.

Sad to see so much diesel hating going on. Everyone I have ever talked to that has done a diesel jeep has loved them. I dont think the 4bt is the best engine for them but they are good. I prefer the isuzu 4bd, easy to get parts for easy to find and can be had for super cheap, last one I bought with tranny was $400 in good running shape complete.

About the only downside to having a diesel is the extra weight, it generally comes to around an extra 300 pounds up front so its a good bit but you get much better reliability and much better mpg's.

I figure I will start a thread sooner or later I but I am stuffing (literally) a 4bt in to a 98 s10 and converting it from 2wd to 4wd. The drive train is all in a guy looked under the hood this week and said “yep that looks like a factory 4 cyl motor” I said thanks, my friend said that’s a diesel not the 4 banger gas motor that was in it. I had planed to put in in my 89 yj but I picked up a nv5600 cheep, so cheep I drove 500 miles out of my way to pick it up and it made the rear drive shaft to short with the rear axle almost jammed on the gas tank. So I searched for new build platform I figure that the s10 is more aerodynamic, has higher payload capacity and the best part I can sleep in the bed when I travel. So my best guess at this point is 6 speed trans, 4:10 gears, and 37” tires I am looking for 35+ mpg. I figure I get 20+ @70 and 25+ @ 63 in my big truck so I think it do able. My main motivation for doing is this as the biggest expenditure I have on my trips I fuel and that bill goes thru the roof driving 2,500 miles one way. I am also wanting to do a vegi oil tank for free driving.

Keep the 4.11s and add an overdrive if one is available for that tcase. Beat of both worlds. It is another added cost though.

Sounds like a good setup but dont expect anywhere near 35mpg's. I've done many of these conversions and to get that kinda mpg's you're gonna need a cummins 3.3L with a 5 or 6spd manual proper rear gears (2wd) and basicly stock sized tires. I'd expect somewhere around 23-25mpg's maybe.
