Andre, thanks for the write up and pics. Are you planning on Cruise Moab this year, even with out the vehicle?

Hey Perry, planning on coming down currently.. Kurt & I and some others actually had sort of an 'expedition' planned, Moab to the Grand Canyon via the Swell home.. But we're not sure it's going to happen unfortunately.. Either way should be there a few days at least... :)

Thank you guys, appreciated :)

I hope you guys don't mind me thinking out loud a little more here... I started thinking a little more about what I wrote here because its really the first time I've put it that way, sort of an open rational about these custom trucks versus factory vehicles or something more stock.. In a way I have started thinking a little differently because of some of the crazy trips you guys are taking.. I started thinking to myself "could my truck really do that" despite all the time and energy I put into it.. Versus say Scott's several-year-old Tacoma that I'm sure he prepped, but he just drove to the Arctic Circle and back, including some wheeling, without a hitch... That said, I DO think a truck can be built from scratch and more or less custom so that it lasts, can be reliable, etc.. So that is what this thread is trying to focus on...

The big thing to me (and the last truck to an extent) is that I do not want to have to be a burden on myself or anyone else in a group if my truck breaks down.. So with that in mind I do think you can build a truck to be reliable and not a burden. This can mean actual breaking down, or days waiting for some obscure part that I chose to use. In every way that anyone else brings their Tacoma or other vehicle on a long distance trip, I want to be able to as well.. Alaska, Baja, etc... So it takes some work, but again I do think if you take the time and energy on one of these trucks, that is built by hand by yourself or someone you trust, it can be reliable and not be a burden...

Second, I started thinking about my little mechanic's grade here.. This is pretty subjective but I am demoting my grade a little bit to probably about a 3.8 out of 5... I have also been doing all sorts of different jobs lately, I've done probably a half dozen head gaskets and installed probably 4 sets of suspensions on different trucks in the last year or so... I just bought a old Chevy van with 65K miles on it and got it started in about 20 minutes, including a new carb... I have started becoming a pretty good, clean, and patient mechanic IMO.. But that said, the guys that are turning their wrenches daily and the real hardcore mechanics who are also designers, suspension etc, know how to do the math, etc, really take it to the top and I have no real professional training in it.. Therefore there is no way I could be a 4.3 out of 5 IMO... But I learned all this by building this last truck from scratch and from misc mechanic experience, but I have focused on overall trying to be a good and trying to always become a better mechanic... So I couldn't say that "you would be a good mechanic" to anyone thinking of doing a truck from scratch, but you could probably be a pretty decent one if you tried. But both Kurt and I are always laughing at some of the crap that people throw together, half ass engine swaps etc...

Anyway,

I think any rig can be built to be capable or reliability in the field... while I have never had my Cruiser on a trip greater than 1000 miles... I wouldn't hesitate too, especially give the fact that many of my 500+ mile trips have had a plethora of HARD wheeling in the mix, lockers in use, winch, etc... often pulling my Trail Trailer too! I've never felt like it was going to strand me.

That being said, there are some comforts that the Tacoma provides in this sense... But for me it really doesn't come down to the reliability, rather choosing the best vehicle for the trip planned. The Tacoma in its current state is capable of a "4" rated trail, but not without some beating, however it gets decent milage, and can hold fast speeds (you know my cruising speeds ;) much better than the FJ40. On the other hand if I know I am going to be in some nasty terrain... the 40 makes sense.

I've always said you can't build 1 vehicle to do everything if you truly like a mix of wheeling terrain (I'm talking everything from high speed desert roads to 5 rated trails in Moab and driving home). So for me the option was to build two vehicles (or three ;))

It also really depends on how you define adventure travel. My first time to Inuvik for example (up the Dempster where Scott and crew just came back from) was in an 83 2wd Toyota Longbed totally overloaded with 200k+ miles on the clock.

Was it an adventure... to an 18 year old kid who just spent the summer working on fishing boats in Alaska and was heading back home to the PNW? Of course it was! It was an adventure of a lifetime!

That being said, it was summer and the Dempster is relatively (for the area) well travelled. I would much rather have a breakdown there than in the middle of the Coast Range in the PNW.

It all comes down to knowing your vehicle and your own limitations. Judging by the work you did on your 55, you are well ahead of the curve. Looking forward to the latest build!

I see no reason why a custom vehicle cannot be reliable. We just drove our '76 3B turbo-diesel FJ55 from Canada to Guatemala without a hitch!
I'll be doing a writeup on this on www.ih8mud.com in the '55 section in September for those interested.

Yes Andre, it's the little things like sound control and weatherstripping that make or break the enjoyment of the custom '55.

Great writeup and "thinking out loud" Andre. I really have alot of respect for your projects. BTW, I got into PC last night and am here through Sunday. Do you have a free night this week to maybe grab a brew? I think my evenings are pretty free after 8pm or so each day.

Great Kristian yes definitely around.. I'll be at the shop tomorrow as well if you have some free time and can get away from the Ski Team... We just moved some things around, it looks great, a lot more room.. I also have a friend from Kentucky with a built FZJ80 who just rolled into town.. I don't know you too well but I have a feeling you/we would all get along great... I'll PM you my number again..

Also everyone else, thanks again for the nice messages, appreciated again! Cruiser_Guy I always love your stories.. Can't remember if I mentioned it on mud but that is so neat how well your (daughter's) BJ55 turned out.. Cheers!

I have been having a bad habit lately of posting "vomit draft" type first drafts before really editing.. I just reedited the first and second posts for clarity, if you reread it should make a lot more sense. I also cleaned up and edited the list of mods as well...
