In the long term as gas keeps going up, the D2 will become a weekend offroad vehicle for most and I believe will have collectable value. Especially if its not a rusted basket case. with the lack of readily available Defenders in N.A. The Discovery becomes a natural choice.

I'll use DividingCreek's quote and give you a great deal at $5,500.

The real question should be if you like the truck. I paid a lot for my 1995 5-Speed and would have been happy to pay 20% more than that. It is the truck I wanted and I could afford it - who cares what the value is. We have a low-mileage TReK DII at the office too, and it is a wonderful truck. We are considering buying a few more Discos to use as training vehicles too.

My 2002 was meticulously cared for. It had a few upgrades with OME lift, ARB bumper, etc. With 100k on the clock I felt more than fortunate to get $5,000 for that truck. In fact, even felt a little guilty to receive that sum.

As Scott said, if you like it keep it. I grew to genuinely loath that beast for all the repair dollars it extolled. I was ready to literally give it away by the end.

He is right, I my opion the D2 is a lot closer to the Defender than many want to admit. Fyi overseas they have started making galvanized chassis for the D2 if there was no collectable value who would go through the swap ?
The more that go to wrecking yards for 500 to 1000 dollars the less that will be in circulation, I still believe a low milage clean DIscovery will not be worth nothing going forward.

Here's how it is:

The DII is the last solid axle truck Land Rover brought to the states, solid axle is more fun!
Sell it privately and buy an LR3/4

I'm pretty sure D2 shares nothing with the defender, except maybe some company info on the paperwork. Not in concept, not in function, not much in parts.
A vehicle is worth what someone will pay. Right now D2's aren't fetching a whole lot. Keep it because you like it. If you sell it don't expect a lot.
Either way, buy a series because leaf springs are where it's at!

The value of a D2 is relative to what it means to the owner. The expense of a D2 is not in the purchase price. Someone could give you a D2 and it could very, very easily demand $5000 in repairs in short order.

How are they the same? Be specific.

D2's have their place but let's be honest they are not Iconic in any way like the Series, RRC or Defender

I don't know that I'd tout the D2 <-> Defender being closely tied thing. D1 & Defender sure, given the significant likeness under the sheet metal btwn the RRC-110/90/D90/D110-Discovery 1.

Iconic is relative I think; my iconic image of Rovers started with the Camel Trophy-to that end it was the Disco year(s) of that event.

We could also call the Disco the vehicle that saved Land Rover from the automotive dustbin...

That being said the supply of D1s & Dii's is such that they are not all that rare nor valuable, particularly the Dii's quality control issues or the now aging D1s that remain.

Defenders in the US are way over-rated and over-priced, and I find it funny what some people will pay for the things.

and honestly, what is different between the D1 and D2 under the sheet metal (sans all the whizbang gizmos)?

I think it really depends on which vehicle you like the best, and then put the money there. For the price of a decent LR3 you could completely rebuild the engine on the D2, new driveshafts, upgrade the suspension, tires, add ARB lockers and HD axles front and rear, install bumpers and a winch, and still have quite a bit of money left over. Not only that, but a fully locked D2 will out perform an LR3 in the toughest conditions. The LR3 is a compromise of on and off road performance and will be smoother and better performing on the road.

If you are going to go with the LR3 then by all means sell the D2 outright. You'll get much less in trade.

I really do love her, and she has been awesome to me: 2001 Epsom Green Discovery II (114k Miles), Tom Woods Drive Shaft, STI 8mm Wires, Champion Spark Plugs, K&N Filter, Roof Rack and Brush Bar with Hellas, Nitto Terra Grapplers on 18" 'Hurricanes' is where I'm at now.

If I'm going to keep it when it makes it back down, I'm going to have to finish her out. Maintenance has been taken care of, and I will continue to take care of it as such. I'm not looking to rock crawl 'per se', but would like to get a little further 'out there'. I know this is extremely capable stock, but I guess what I see as on order of importance:
Suspension (It's really time, and I realistically should've gotten a slight lift prior to the new tires 2 years ago)
CDL Kit
Front Bumper w. Winch/Rear Bumper/Sliders (Those Rim with the Grapplers, but I know I should find a 16" Rim set that I like so I have more tire options and also better performance)
Replace crap rack that I have with Baja (or something similar, dependent on cost and timing)

Everything else I truly know of would be a upgrade or swap out as it becomes a convenience or due to time or damage. Am I missing anything major?

Yep, you guys are all right. The D2 is completely worthless and less than capable off road. All the D2 owners should sell and be ashamed to have ever called themselves rover owners.

I'll be out shopping for a Jeep Compass. Probably more reliable and capable than a crappy D2.

...a year into a new career with great pay and benefits, plus the Wife finished school and is now working.

I'll get a bonus come June/July, and that's probably when I'll make the move.

Thoughts?

Sell it, bank the bonus, if you and your wife are stable after 3 years, consider something then.
