About 4 years ago I was looking for a diesel engined 4x4, and was looking at a nice local Land Cruiser HJ60. The seller couldn't make up his mind to sell, so in the meantime I chanced upon a listing for a 1986 110 diesel with only 70,000 kms on it. It was up in Goose Bay Labrador (look it up on the map!). Had been used for off-duty recreation by UK pilots at the NATO air force base there. A civilian model, LHD, station wagon. A few body dents, but nothing major, and in outstanding condition (mechanically, and zero rust). I bought it for $10,000 cdn (had to fly up there and drive it back across the wilds of Labrador and Quebec, a nice little road adventure in itself). Spent a couple of years equipping it for future "expeditions" until I realized that the money would be better spent paying down my mortgage. Sold it for around $16.5cdn to a guy who flew from Tofino BC (I live in Ottawa) and drove it back across Canada.

Seeing the prices of the NA Defenders makes me laugh, given the nature of the Defender/90/110 vehicle (ie. bare bones utilitarian vehicle), and as someone said, what they are worth elsewhere in the world. Supply and demand at work I suppose. Mine wasn't suitable for sale in the US or I could possibly have made a fair bit more money on it. In the end, I sold it for what I thought was a fair price, and assume the buyer was very happy with it.

Now, I'm back on the diesel Land Cruiser search! (after a brief excursion down the g-wagen path...)
Cheers.
