Good news, glad to hear it.

What's the deal with the $814 towing bill? That sounds outrageous. Didn't you say you were only ~20 miles out of town?

It was just shy of 200 miles... Sunday hookup charge etc. I'll submit it to USAA, they are usually really good about reimbursment.

6 hours at Safari Ltd, a new all metal radiator, a new thermostat and the Taco is back on the road! There seems to be no engine damage and things are good to go. Hugh seems to think that the thermostat stuck closed and caused the radiator to blow it's seal. At least I think that's how he explained it...

dude! i am glad to hear it worked out, tough little engines those 3.4 liters. i was not so lucky with a 350 chev, same thing happened to me and i blew the head gasket, so when read someone say head gasket, i was thinking that or worse, like fried bearings (which aren't as tasty as they sound) or something else cooked on the bottom end

It sounds like a stuck closed thermostat.

But what the heck do I know? Sorry you had to deal with that! I know what it's like to be stranded!

I think you should win one "slightly" used 3.4L thermostat.:jump:

My guess is head gasket. I hate to say it, but I think that's what it is.

The power loss and the strange sound make me wonder the same thing. Pull the plugs I bet you'll find a borked plug head floating around in one of the combustion chambers. Had the same thing happen to my 4Runner last spring.
