David Letterman's Top Ten Reasons You Know It's Cold in Death Valley:

----------------
And the number one reason you know it's frickin cold in DV--
1. Yes, it's true...hardcore Al Walters goes to a motel!!!!!...and Death Valley will never be the same:wavey: :wavey: :wavey: :wavey:

I think my next Death Valley trip will be in July or August, my kind of weather.

I hear 'ya Al:eek:...I may not be inclined to do DV in July/August...hot hot hot!!:sombrero: ...but I'm gonna think twice about cold weather camping after this trip. Anybody else have simliar thoughts? Granted, it's kinda fun and challenging for a night or two, withstanding the elements, warming around the campfire, comiserating comraderie, etc etc...but then I start "fighting" the cold and thinking everything I love about camping and the outdoors is just a wee bit more enjoyable in warmer weather. But it was a great trip :wings: :)

I drove through in July of this year, its was a cool 128 in the shade, the ground temperature on the road was something like 190. It was brutal but kind of nice, I am not sure camping would be fun as it may not drop below 100 at night, camping at high elevations would be bearable.

I wanted to take an egg to cook on the road but I forgot it, I do remember when the wind blew it was like a hair dryer and I was in my truck with no air con! My engel with its jacket on was outside in the bed and the heat didn't phase it at all.

Been there in Stove Pipe Wells when it was 130 - cooled down at night to a balmy 110 - that was camping under the stars with little call for a blanket ;)

I may be a little strange, but you wouldn't find me camping under 6,000' during the summer in DV.

It is my Christmas Avatar :088:

this is truly a coincidence - We were in Death Valley with the Norcal Wagons early March 06 - Finding the Marble bath -Alvaro decided to take photos of the group with the Marbles as eyes ( borrowing from his favorite music group Marrillion and thier CD Marbles)

I took about 100 of my images that I liked and put them online.

I didn't get any of the camps and night time parties. If I use anybody's image in my trip report, I'll give you credit.

Edited because of a bad link: New link is : Here.

Chris will be doing some more cold weather camping pretty soon :yikes:

You know, he made a comment about doing Arctic training one night. Something about doing laps around the campsite in his BVD's....? If he did, I must have missed it. Either way, he's a little more prepared now than he was a week ago.

Sadly for those who had to leave early, the last camp saw great weather and a perfect morning. The Sequoia tree that Chuck lugged down on Sunday, made for a great fire out in the dunes. I cruised through the lower elevations of DV Monday and it was t-shirt and shorts weather. I guess the lesson is, the higher elevation/less traveled trails of the Inyo Mountains are "pay to play."

*************************

My last set of photos (lots of time to download when you're stuck in a hotel), and I should have been captioning these as others have, so -

1. A frigid morning in the first camp
2. Downtown Ballarat
3. Following Al out from the Geology Cabin
4. Looking down on Lippencot (4Runner barely visible below)
5. Chuck in Goler Wash en route to Newman's Cabin
6. The coolest 80 owning pro lifeguard, who's walked on the Great Wall of China, that I know
7. 80 + 101 = drool! RenaissanceDude in Dumont Dunes Monday AM
8. Yours truly, waiting for Pasquale at Barker Ranch
