Death Valley Wander 2012

Thanks for the kind words everyone, glad you like the trip report :)

I recognized the B2 bomber but not the second plane. A air-to-air tanker? Airborne Command Post?
Very curious as to what the second plane is too! Anyone know?

Second plane is a B 1 Lancer Bomber .

maybe it is the low-res telephoto shot but I never considered that it was a Bone as it looks so odd in the OP's shot. Maybe forward swept wings at the time? I looked for other shots that might present a similar camera angle but no luck getting an exact match, especially with the dorsal looking thingie hanging off the back.

Last one is OP's photo. If you look at the full sized photo the plane's rear horizontal stabilizer is low mounted and the B-1B is mid mounted on the vertical stabilizer

I love seeing the B-2 in low level flight where you can see the flaperons (combination of flaps and ailerons) actuating

Aeon,

In your UV photo of the scorpian how did you set the camera to capture the low light image and the color?

Thanks!

I cheated :D

Didn't have a uv filter for the Nikon, so I pointed the iphone through uv glasses to get the shot :)

maybe it is the low-res telephoto shot

This is about the best I can do for resolution from the original telephoto shot, hopefully this helps :)

You did not see that plane. End of discussion.

Ignore the muffled wop-wop-wop of helicopter blades in your vicinity.

A highly modified C-40 or Boeing 737 that was probably off-the active rolls (evident by the older engines) and modified by USAF Research Labs for in-flight testing of the B-2's stealth properties (bulbous fairings on the nose, tail, and dorsal surfaces). Bet it has a $13,000 toilet seat, too.

Definitely kills the B-1 guess. Thanks much for that image!!!

From Secret Agent "E"

In mid-2000 the Lockheed Martin Advanced Prototype Center, part of the Advanced Development Programs' (ADP) organization, handed over its first major deliverable -- a flight-worthy composite structure -- on the center's first design and fabrication contract. The structure, a 19-foot long, 6.2-foot diameter fairing and bulkhead assembly, was delivered to customer DENMAR Inc. The prime contractor Denmar is a company specializing in stealth technology. The "Den" stands for President Denys Overholser, the former Skunk Works engineer credited with devising the shape of the first stealth aircraft. The assembly provides an aerodynamic transition from the existing aft fuselage of a T-43 aircraft, a modified Boeing 737-200, to an oversized radome. The aircraft serves as a Radar Test Bed (RTB) for future Air Force programs. The design, fabrication and machining of the structure's components were all performed at Palmdale. The structure is made of a 90-percent carbon epoxy/honeycomb sandwich material, with machined aluminum parts, and houses an airborne radar assembly. The contract with DENMAR also included the design and fabrication of three radomes for the RTB aircraft. Each radome is more than 6.5 feet in diameter and 9 feet in length.

Aeon: Awesome pics! I assume you are a professional photographer - if you aren't you should be.

I've seen many of the things you photographed but was never able to capture them the way you did.

I think the essence of an artist is to be able to capture what other people see.

Aeon: Just to add to the above:

You should think about putting together a coffee table book of your DVNP photos.

I would buy it and then when people ask me "why on earth would you want to go to Death Valley?" I would just hand them your book and say "see for yourself." ;)
