Denali Highway 7-25 through 7-28

As mentioned here earlier last week I took the 71 Blazer out on it's trial run this weekend. My oldest son is turning 12 this week so we decided to create an annual Birthday trip, just the two of us. I think this will be very important as we head into the teenage years.

So we left town Saturday and drove north towards Paxon stopping frequently and jumping on any side roads that looked fun. This became the norm for the trip. Once we made Paxon we headed out on the Denali Highway (130 miles of unpaved scenic glory). Over the next 4 days we wandered, pondered, explored mining roads, got lost on purpose, hung out, told stories and generally had a great time. I would tell you more, but I have already indoctrinated the young one about "what goes on the road, stays on the road". It's our shared fun memories.

On to the pics!!

One of our camp sites, just a snap shot, but that's what memories are.

Another camp site, this shows how I used the tow bar for double duty. I really didn't like leaving the swing gate out with all that weight on the hinge. So the folding tow bar was a perfect way to shore it up at camp.

My son, looking OH SO COOL! Ha! Kids.

The girls (mom and daughter team) seemed very happy as well. I love doggy smiles.

Maclaren Summit Trail around midnight. Time for bed. Nicely there is 75" from the back of the drivers seat to the tailgate so at 6'1" I fit just fine. Although with the two of us and two 65lb dogs it was a little cramped at times.

The picture of your son in the fireweed should be framed. That is a really nice shot.

You all tenting it? Any bear encounters? Moose?

Great trip.

No tent for this one, we stowed gear in the front seats and slept in the back. The only bear encounter was between one of my dogs and the bears droppings, they just love to roll in that stuff. Grrrr. A little dish soap and a nearby river fixed that.

We did see a moose and calf and later on a caribou. But that was it for wildlife, a bit surprising really, we should have seen far more. But you never know how that part will work out.

Great trip with your son and dog. I especially like your choice of trail rigs. Nice to see another classic GM rig on here.

Thanks for all the responses. I guess I had better keep that rig out on the trail and keep the happenings posted here!
