Diesel Hiluxes

Theres a big Difference between the 3litre 1KZ turbo diesel Hilux.....
3 litre 1KD D4D in the current shape hilux and the 3 litre 1KD in the current shape Prado.....the Prado has the most torque and power and is absolutley awesome for towing.......not to mention the unbeleivable fuel economy and 150 litre fuel tank size in the Prado...cruising range over 1300km.....

Yeah, I hate all the choices we have to make between Toyota diesel engines in the US, too... oh wait - WE DON'T HAVE ANY. :(

We got the L/2L/2L-T/3L for a couple years in the 1980s, what more do you want?? :sombrero:

Do you have some more?

1KD - FTV Engine

The 1KD FTV Engine is the 3 litre D4D Diesel Engine. It is a Direct Injection 4 - stroke engine, in-line 4 cylinder 16 Valve DOHC.

These Engines use both a common rail and direct injection systems to achieve higher performance, cleaner emissions, low noise and low vibration.

An Intercooler is also provided with this engine to lower intake air tempriture and increase output.

Compression Ratio - 17.9:1
Power Output - 126kW @ 3,600rpm
Torque Output - 343nM from 1,400 rpm to 3,400rpm

Firing Order - 1,3,4,2
Fuel Cetane - 48 or higher

There are a large array of aftermarket performance chips from around the world that when coupled with a 2 3/4" - 3" exhaust system increase the Hilux's torque levels from the factory 343nM to 430 - 450nM

The benefit of the hilux diesel over other manufacturers diesl engines in the same class is the flat torque curve that the hilux has from 1400-3400rpm.

The only downside to these new engines is that they require very clean diesel fuel to run properly...bad diesel has been known to destroy injectors, and engines themselves...something which insurance wont cover you for and people have been known to have to spend 10,000dollars and more to replace the engines.....

great vehicles, only downside I have experienced with mine is that they should have fit 4.1 diff gears instead of 3.73's.....the auto is only a 4 speed and 1st gear in the auto is waaay too tall, when coupled to the diff ratio and larger tyres engine braking downhill is almost non-existent and hair raising at times.

non the less, the benfits outway the negatives....:victory:

That is a WAY flat torque curve for this diesel. I prefer a steeper rise, but I bet that drives like a dream.

They're all over the place here in Malaysia- anyone want me to bring them back one? :smiley_drive: I wish I could bring a few of the vehicles I've seen back including a couple of diesel Rovers.

My 1KZ is certainly no monster on power, but on low end (read: off-idle) torque, it can't be stopped. It is a BRILLIANT engine for slow offroading.. very low idle, big flywheel, lots of grunt.. and all with ~24mpg if I drive it right.. which I rarely do. The mileage would be even better but these are indirect injected engines, so they lose a lot of heat to the head. That is part of what explains the torque, however.

The D4Ds make a ton more power, but as someone mentioned, are far more picky on fuel. Sadly Toyota never put a non-common rail, direct injected engine into the smaller chassis. Those would have the best of both worlds.. even better mileage, less stringent fuel requirements, great low-end performance.

Anyone driving this engine from a 4.0v6 will be sorely disappointed in the power department.. that's just a fact. Though I'm sure the first guys to drive the 3.0v6 (as bad of an engine as it is) in the late first-gen 4runners said the same thing about the 22RE.. and tons of guys still run the little 4-banger happily.

So, to get to the point: they like the Hilux Diesels because they are a good balance of power, mileage, and longevity. Oh.. and because they are diesels. :)

Sure, bring me back a 1KD-powered manual gearbox half cut please. :D

"I don't know why all you Tacoma owners are so ga-ga over them."

range range range... I've carried 4 20L gas cans and still come pretty close to the edge on range with my 4.0L V6. Aired-down, fully-loaded, 4Hi/4Lo mileage is stupid bad and my reading is that the 3.0D gets 40% better mileage.
