Let the drooling begin. Jeep unveiled a new Wrangler Unlimited for the military (see link below).

http://www.pickuptruck.com/html/news/chrysler/jeep/j8.html

It's got everything for expo travel including:
2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine (158 hp 295 lb-ft)
Command-Trac® four-wheel drive
Beefed up axles, brakes, and suspension
2952lb max payload
7716lb max towing
hood-mounted snorkel (30in deep wading)
available in 2 door with pickup bed or 4 door
heavy duty bumpers
available spring 2008

I pay my taxes, I eat my veggies, and #$*!#&# I want one of these bad. Maybe I should just go to Iraq next summer and buy one from the bad guys. Seems everything else sent over there gets lost or stolen anyway. Now I’m bummed.

The 2.8 litre CRD engine in that vehicle has been highly touted for its power and efficiency. A number of reports are coming out that this engine averages b/w 28-33 mpg which is phenomenal, especially in a Jeep vehicle.

That's the liberty diesel motor. Noisy and not very powerful. Thats a disappointment. Notice the leaf springs in the rear.

Yep, a 4 door JK Rubi with a factory diesel would cause me to very seriously reconsider my Toyota loyalty. I can't think of many vehicles for which I'd give up my LC80.

You thought the 2.8 was noisy? I drove 2 different brand new ones that were still on the lot and I thought they were as quiet as an electric golf cart. I could barely tell it was running. Are they like MT's, that get louder with more miles....?

And the turbo-lag was typical but once it got up to speed I really enjoyed driving it. I just wasn't comfortable in the smallish Liberty.

I'm not big into diesels but I liked the CRD. I haven't seen anyone getting those high MPG numbers though.

Why? In my narrow, clouded, completely out-of-touch mind the 80 series is pretty much the pinnacle of 4WD. Everything up to that point was just sharpening the pencil and everything since has gone south. Bearing in mind that I don't really have a strong feeling either way for a diesel. Seems like an awful lot of fuss over a couple of MPG. If my truck got mileage under 20, I guess I'd probably be more concerned with it, though.

I like diesels because they have better relibility and longevity (historically, now that they are coming into mainstream vehicles, that may just be a pipe dream and they will be no better) because they are built stronger. I also like the relibility due to the fewer controls that are on the engines. THis might also be changing with the times as well though. I guess that I don't know much about the CRD, and my past experiances with diesel clouds my reality about wanting them in a Wrangler.

I wanted one in a 2 door unlimited. I thought my head was going to pop on weather to buy an 06 2 door, or wait until 07 and hope for a diesel. Then I found out that the unlimited would ALL be 4 doors (not a 4 door fan).

If there is a soul out there who can market a CRD swap to a wrangler. I would do it.

For those wanting to save a few gallons....
You can always swap a Hemi into your Wrangler. You get the fancy pants 5 speed with it (along with more cylinders with your hair on fire acceleration) and still save MPG.

However, you can buy ALOT of gas for the price of that lump...

Burns Offroad has done the 2.8 swap, but most people are waiting for the 3.0 CRD to make it into the Wrangler. Could be a pipe dream, but most rumours are the 2009/2010 timeframe. That being said, now that Daimler is out of the picture, who knows.

arghhhh! Now that's exactly what I need as a tow vehicle for my TJ instead of my Durango.

But then, I wouldn't even need my TJ, since this will offroad at least as good, someplaces even better!

But I've put soooo much passion into my TJ, and it's just the way I like it now, I can't sell it!

Arrghh!

I hope they never allow it to be imported to the US, so I won't have to make a decision one way or the other! (actually I hope they do bring it here - it's just too perfect not to!)
