Discada (Disco) build

Man. There is a older guy lives behind us that has something like that hanging on his shed. Might see about talking to him about it. Would be a good addition to my weekend grillin.

Sirloin Steaks

Did some big sirloin steaks the other night.. Still trying to get the hang of cooking with this thing as you can just about blacken a steak and still have the inside cold. They were good and rare but I want to get a bigger diffuser/burner at some point. :chef:

You have just about convinced me to make one for myself. I've been thinking about one for a while and have a disk out back that would be just right. Hummmm....

Wow, it's been a long while since I posted on the disco. I've used it a few times here and there but with it hanging on the wall of my garage it had gotten a little rust on it. That told me I wasn't using it enough so I fired up the burner, gave it a good cleaning, and seared some steaks to make up for lost time. :chef:

After getting it good and oiled back up I ordered a cover for it. I was planning on taking it camping with me this past weekend and I wanted to keep it somewhat clean while in the trailer (and to keep it from getting other stuff dirty). I went to Southwest Disk to order one of their covers that are made by Mountain Ridge Gear. It used to be that you could order the bag directly from them as they make all sorts of canvas goodies but they've since taken the disco bag off and it may only be available through Southwest Disk now. A real bargain at $30 compared to some that I've seen.

Anyway I figured I'd shoot a few picts to show it off. It's very well made and thought out. There's a slit on one side for the handle to go through, a zippered pocket for your metal spoon, lighter, etc. Velcro closes the other half. This one is for a 22" disk but they make one for 24" if you have one that large.

And a food shot just cause. :chef:

Venison Sausage links, fried potatoes, and scrambled eggs for the kids and then I whipped up a few breakfast taco's (chicken, steak, potatoes, green chilis, cheese, egg, topped with homemade tomatillo salsa). Yum.

Did somebody say BACON! We used the Disco this past weekend for a Cub Scout camping trip. It was great to cook all the omelet fixings in.

Used it again this weekend to cook breakfast soft taco's for the Cub Scouts again. It does so well for large groups. I used it on my Partner Stove and am now looking for a wok ring to keep it stabilized since the grate rods aren't exactly in the right spots.

Shot of it on the Partner? I cook for 6 or more everyday!

I'd have to take one as I forgot this past weekend. I have the 22" partner and my disco is 22" so it depends on where you want the heat (middle over one burner or in two places over both).

The griddle nests in the stove? I was looking at one of the lodge griddles that is reversable. Grill marks on one side, flat on the other, both sides have dripping troughs.

Between the stove and the burner on a stand what is your favorite heat source. Is it better to have a high btu heat source centered under the disc or is it better to have a larger burner that heats more or the disc surface?

It's better to have a larger burner with a fine control valve in my opinion. Having too high BTU burner just scorches the seasoning and almost instantly burns food. If you want to add water to the disco and heat for cleaning it will boil it in short order for sure. I haven't gotten around to it but I still want to replace my diffuser with a larger one. If you look at the websites that make disco's and burners you'll note that they use a very large diffuser like ~10".

After seeing the skottle burner I really like the idea of using something similar. It's more portable and takes up much less space. My idea is to make a ring (like a wok ring) that has notches for my Partner stove as well as pegs to hold a single burner Coleman with detachable legs. Sort of a multi-use ring. One of the things I didn't like about the skottle is that you can't slide the disc on the heat source cause the legs are permanently attached. Personal preference I guess. I think the Coleman single burner stove has enough btu's to cook well and fine enough control to not get out of control.

Thank you for the reply. I have been eye balling the southwest disc for a while. I have a rather large burner that may be overkill but I believe would work with a larger disc. The skottle seems to be a well made product for the money.

It seemed to be. One of the nice things about the Skottle is the smaller size. A 22" disco will make MASSIVE amounts of food for larger groups and the smaller Skottle is a nice size for a family or small group of friends.

I saw one at Overland Expo East this year and snapped a few shots of the stand and burner if you're wondering what they look like.
