Yeah, i pulled the solenoid, and the lever worked fine. Thanks!Save yourself some grief and pull the lockout solenoid, it's the round cap like cover with 4 bolts...

Oh I put it back in.... would it be better to leave it out?Smart move. I can attest that this solenoid will fail when you least expect it. For me it failed (fortunately) when I shifted to high range on a 4WD trail. Made the rest of the trail difficult but as least I could make the 4 hours drive home at highway speeds!!
I don't think so......is that the proper way to go about it? I had assumed just sliding the shaft into the opening, and lining the splines up would suffice.

That sounds like a solid plan. I'll have to reseal her, but silicone is cheap and it beats the hell out of the headache I've had contemplating this thing. I'll have to use a jack and get the weight off the shaft first though. The one time I did it, we pulled the access plate on the back (as it mounts on the truck) of the LT230 and pulled that gear out-then bolted her up to the tranny, and then re-installed the gear over the transmission shaft and buttoned it all up.

Well I tell you, I had a hell of a time. My friend and I put nearly twenty hours, using a couple Jacks and hand tools. Every damn bolt was corroded. It's a good thing I'm a strong guy, because that's the only way I was able to keep the sockets on straight. I'll try it tonight and get back to you. I won't be home for another 9 hours, but sleep is a secondary concern.I honestly am damn impressed you got as far as you did without doing it-I assume you pulled the gear on the old box or did you just unbolt and yank it all out somehow?
If I recall...and I could be wrong (I have an R380) I think you could pop the access plate off the back and unbolt all that from the inside-including the transmission output shaft. But that could be bad gouge.
Anyway you slice it that round panel on the back of the TC should get unbolted (may be worth numbering the bolts since I think those have different depths) and then after you are done, yes, def re-seal with RTV or something.
