A great resource for you is www.turbodieselregister.com.

To answer your questions...

What drivetrain does the 2003 - 2007.5 4X4 Dodge, Cummins diesel come with?

4 Speed Auto: Chrysler Corporate 48RE (I believe some 2003s came w/ the 47RE, Opt for the 48RE if you have the option)

Dana Front and Rearends: No, 2003 and up came with AAM axles. 9.25 (I think) in the front and 10.5 in the rear with auto in the 2500 and 11.5 in the rear with manual tranny or the 3500.

Which Transfer case: New Venture 272 Manual shift and 273? electronic shift

What issues did these have: None really... bent front axles if you like airtime... some driveline vibrations... death wobble on modified trucks.

What upgrades to they need: A good suspension... Lorenz, Carli, KORE.

Hope that helps...

Don't forget about the other Dodge Cummins forum, Diesel Truck Resource. This one is free. http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev/index.php

Rockcrawler covered it pretty well. Don't be afraid of the 6 speed manual trans though.

Simple but very useful mods would include
1) removing the air dam before you rip it off (or worse partially rip it off) in a snowbank or crossing a wash.
2) An increase in tire size to improve the clearance under the huge rear diff. See my sig for one example.

The automatics are fine mine has 100,000 miles on it and my last one has 180,000 miles and still going strong. Who wants to shift?

You are correct in that the front ends from 2003 to 2007 (not sure about 2007.5 and on) have AAM 9.5. The rear ends however all(2500 & 3500) have AAM 11.5 if the truck has the Cummins motor. The AAM 10.5 was in the 2500 Hemi equipped trucks. The standard manual from 2003 to 2004.5 had the NV5600 and the 2005 to current model have the G56.
