Doing Headgaskets and timing belt - what else?

Hello, it's been awhile since I have posted. I actually sold my montero to my younger brother.

The cooling system sprung a leak on him, and it overheated. It now has a mildly blown headgasket. It is a hint to need the timing belt anyway, so I told him we could do it all at once.

What else should we do while we are in there? The previous owner already replaced the valve seals, so that is not an issue.

I assume pullies wouod be a good idea. What about the water pump? I know on lots of vehicles it's a good idea to do that at the same time.

Thanks guys!

Water pump and gasket, thermo sensor, thermostat, both radiator hoses, bith heater core hoses. Essentially all of your low cost cooling components. You may be looking at about a $100.00 investment for all of that but it's got piece of mind.

You may want to also do the valve seals. Much easier to do with the heads off and on a bench.

He did mention valve seal were already done.

The thing I'd add to that list is updating to revised crank bolt AND cam seals (front and back)

If you are replacing a head gasket, then VC gaskets and tube top grommets. When was last tune up? May as well change the plugs. How many miles? If you have to take off all that is needed for the head, then do all the other hoses on top of the engine, and also the o-rings and grommets on the FI. Cam and crank oil seals.

Thanks guys, seems like I am on the same page as you. I ordered a full gasket kit. So new VC gaskets and tube top grommets, cam and crank seals. New plugs are here, as well as wires. Don't think FI o-rings were included, but we'll see. One thing I didn't think about was the specialty tools... Apparently one is needed for the head bolts, wasn't expecting that. And for the cam seals.

Has anyone does this before? Can you get by with out the specialty tools?

I did not want to start a new thread on a sim issue so my question is: 94 ls, 154k blown head or gasket(not sure which) white smoke and water out of the pipe. Its been two yrs since I started it. Should I get it fixed. Looking at heads, water pump, timing belt,plugs-top end gone through. My mechanic said I was looking at 2-2.5k for him to do it. Just not sure if it's worth it. I figure if it's done I'll know whats good and bad about it and what will need fixing next vs spending 2-3k on another monty and not knowing what I'm getting. Sorry for the long post-hope I gave enough info.
